Distraction: Overdoing it On a bike

I’m trying to distract myself from the thought of putting down my first born son who is not even 12 and we got 6 months after being married.

With the introduction, the question is whether you’ve overdone it on a bike. I’m contemplating this since I saw the price of my next project and had that thought. I really can’t rationalize the cost relative to who I am as a rider, but rather a Fred with nice bikes. This question works regardless of your means since ours are all different and our freak out point is different too.

You lost your 12-year-old child, but have a question about cycling? My condolences. Do whatever you have to to get through it.

A fur baby (dog), so not a child in that sense. I thought people would figure it was a pet since euthanizing human children is not really a thing.

I also want to note that the loss of a dog is is in now way comparable to the loss of an actual and I did not want to imply otherwise.

Well, this thread's gotten off on the wrong foot.

Sorry about your dog - loosing a pet is tough.

Regarding bikes, it's hard deciding how much is too much. Presumably you aren't having trouble putting food on the table or paying the rent. So the question is if there's other discretionary spending what would be more appropriate. One solution is to create a "bike fund" and save. All work and no play is no fun.

I used to use a separate account for bike stuff, but we now do everything from the joint account. I realize I need to have fun when I can without constantly worrying about the future.

Loss is loss. Pain is pain. Yours is as valid as anyone else's. I had to let go of my cat back in September that I adopted in 2006. I don't have kids. It was rough. Still is. Grieve the loss, celebrate the life, and keep those memories alive.

As for the bike...... well, you know I'm just going to say "go for it". There's no fitness or coolness test for what bike you should ride - beyond getting something that fits right and that you enjoy looking at. Bikes have gotten more expensive. So it goes. Everything else has too. Have you priced a rental car these days? A golf vacation? Live it up. You're investing in something that will help keep you happy and healthy. And post pics.

Regarding the financial side of things, my understanding is that you are a successful lawyer without any human children, and thus will earn more money in your lifetime than you will ever know what to do with. So there's no shame in spending some of it on a bike you like. And even if might sometimes feel like it's a lot of money for a bike, just remember that you make more money than almost every single person working in the bike industry. Throw a little cash their way, and maybe make someone else's life a little bit better.

I suspect more than the value of the bike just disappeared in the past week from your retirement account due to stock market fluctuations, and you probably aren't stressing out over that.

Now, if this isn't the case, and you're making major sacrifices to afford this bike, that might require rethinking, but there's no shame in using the money you have to buy the things you want.

Agree with Clean39T. Losing your pet is bad and no one should diminish the pain you feel because it's "just a dog" (or cat, bird, whatever you cared for). That's rot. I'm sorry you are going through it, but unfortunately it is part of the bargain we make. In your case, 12 years of wonder and love for the worst day ever. For me, that's a deal I'll make every time.

The bike? Do whatever clears your head for a bit.
