Campy Triple Question

I saw a Colnago on FB for sale- looks to be late 1990s. I think it’s a good deal but it has a triple crankset. Question- can I just pick up a double crankset and adjust the front derailleur to 2 positions or am I stuck with the triple unless I find another front shifter?

What model of shifters does it have? If they are Ergo (not Escape), then it doesn't index the front derailleur, so the shifters are agnostic about the number of chainrings. Theoretically, you could adjust the derailleur limit stops for a double crank, but the limit stop screws might not be long enough. In which case it would better to use a double front derailleur.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but won't it require a BB replacement also?

I've had two Campagnolo Triples and still have the one on my De Rosa. They work great!

It is Ergo.

You could ride it as is and ignore the small ring------------until you get old enough to NEED it like me.

Then the shifter won't be a problem.

One option is to use the triple crank as a double. If the front derailleur limit screws aren't long enough to block out one of chainrings, and you want to use just the two outer rings, then you can adjust the cable tension so the derailleur won't move to the inner position.

If you want to replace the triple crank with a double, then as noted above, you'll need a shorter BB spindle. If the triple derailleur limit screws aren't long enough to work with double crank, then you'll need a double front derailleur.

As Mark stated, you won't need much to convert to a double. I'd be happy to swap double crank and FD for triple if we have equal condition stuff to trade.

+1 on simply removing the small chainring.

(Assuming you can live with the number of teeth on the middle one)

IME--yes to the BB replacement if you wanted to change cranksets.

Record/Chorus Sq taper: 102mm regular; 111mm asymmetrical for triple--no exceptions that I am aware of:

Centaur/Veloce/Mirage: 111mm regular; 115.5 symmetrical for triple. This one is a little less hard and fast--since it also depends on the tubing size--I have one skinny tube bike running a Centaur triple on a 111mm BB.

And yes--I am of the age where I appreciate the bail-out extra front ring...

You can use the symmetrical 111mm bb on the record triple. The difference in chainline is less than 1mm compared to the asymmetrical BB.
