Torx is the new hex

Wish someone had sent me the memo...

I've been playing around with new stuff - Ekar, Enve seat clamp and miscellaneous, and I'm running into torx heads.

Just a heads up...if you're coming out of the dark ages (Campy Record 10 Compact) like me...

Torx is great. Wish it was used more.

Get quality tools. Torx has way more surface area, ergo likely better if using hard, strong materials.

I have been switching most of my hand tools over to Wera for the past few years. They are awesome tools. kctool.com is where i have been buying all my Wera stuff from. Search bicycle for the bike specific tools.

I like torx, but the multi-tool issue hits home. Not an issue at home because I have all the bits

The only decent Torx bolts I have encountered on a bike are on stems. Every other Torx bolt / screw I've found is junk and needs replacement. Torx in low profile heads is the worst offender - it requires a moderate to deep tool insertion depth to not be a total disaster.

Like a 3 or 4 sided spoke key, Torx is great particularly with small, soft, alloy bolts. Get a set of Torx wrenches...part of any decent tool box.

SRAM's disc brake caliper bolts have a too-shallow torx head. I just replace with stainless steel hex socket bolts and stainless washers.

I do like the torx but when Campy uses the torx bolts in the hood clamps it can be very tight to get in there as compared to a hex ball end where you can be at an angle and still turn the bolt without ruining the bolt head. I took an hex wrench and cut the end off close to the 90 and then welded a torx bit in place of the removed end just so I could get at the Campy clamp bolt head. It works well for that purpose but its a pretty tight and short at the bend to get access.
They might make one of these tools but when you have parts and equipment at your disposal just make your own.

I often replace them on things I regularly adjust/remove. I use two small ratchets and ball end screwdrivers a lot so Torx just get in my way. I have no opinion which is better.
