Just want to come back and thank everyone who provided guidance, tips and suggestions, they were very helpful and exactly what I was looking for. I have intentionally kept it relatively open without creating too many "criteria" so that I do not pigeon hole anyone or myself into just a certain set of expectations or recommendations. If you see something glaringly missing or not mentioned yet, feel free to bring it up...what's the worst that can happen? Nuthin'.

don't know. it's my wife's high school friend and she took care of it. I am just happy that we save $$$ in accommodations, so I don't bother to ask too many questions. I figure we will know once we get in the rental car and I say, "Uh---honey, where we goin'?"

you should find out as itll help you plan. Depending on where you stay you can add or subtract hours of traffic depending on where you want to go.

http://www.italianhomemadecompany.com My favorite Italian food in the city.
For a great hike, take the Ferry to Angel Island and hike to the top of Mt. Livermore. The view from there is without equal.

Chinese Food:

San Tung in the Inner Sunset has good (fried) chicken wings; rest of the food is OK but nothing special
Jiangnan Cuisine in the Outer Richmond for Shanghainese style
Szechuan Taste in the Outer Sunset or Z&Y Lounge in Chinatown for Szechuan
Koi Palace in Daly City for dim sum
Hakkasan in Financial District for upscale modern Chinese
The Pot's in Outer Richmond for hot pot
Old Mandarin Islamic in Outer Sunset for Islamic Chinese food (lots of lamb dishes, cumin spiced stuff)

Some good hole-in-the-wall type Chinese joints: House of Pancakes in Outer Sunset, King of Noodles in Outer Sunset, Good Luck Dim Sum in Inner Sunset for take-out style dim sum.

Lots more in the East Bay as others have suggested. +1 to Shandong in Oakland. Great Wall in Berkeley for Peking Duck.
