D&H Trail in Vermont this past Monday . . .

What a great recovery ride! My friend Chet had just done a challenging gravel event in Vermont, and I was coming off several days of heaving riding and hiking in the Adirondacks, so for our recovery ride we decided to explore this beautiful rail trail along the old D&H railroad route from West Pawlet south to West Rupert, VT. Chet originally found it and I’m glad he did! It was a beautiful day with blue skies, bursting out green trees, and more Dandelions than I have ever seen anywhere at one time. The railroad bed is almost dead flat with beautiful scenery everywhere, some quirky sights that add spice to the day, and friendly people along the way and at Sherman’s Store in West Rupert. It’s a small town “has it all” store where we grabbed some delicious mac n’ cheese out of the crock pot and enjoyed a leisurely lunch before heading back north. After exploring a bit on the trail north of West Pawlet, we ended up with 22 miles, barely any climbing–and lots still left to explore next time we come over this way. A great day! South Berne, NY, yesterday . . .

The weather was perfect yesterday for my friend Gail and I to go explore some roads in South Berne, NY, that I haven’t ridden in several years. This area is in the rural “hill towns” of southern Albany County, where the weather is generally cooler because of the elevation (+1000ft) and there’s no shortage of 10%+ climbs. Much of our ride was in the Partridge Run Wildlife Management Area (WMA) that’s in the hills above South Berne Town Park where we parked. After climbing the forest road upstream beside Partridge Run, we visited a number of wonderfully scenic (and deserted!) ponds including White Birch Lake, Fawn Lake, Tubbs Pond, plus Wood and Newt Ponds. Finally, we flew down the absolutely screaming downhill on Bradt Hollow Road to get back to the town park. It was over four hours to go 27 miles, but it wasn’t about average speed today, it was about experiencing the beauty that is upstate New York. A great day! (All photos with Panasonic Lumix ZS200 and iPhone 13 Pro.)

+1. Love your picks!! There are so many good ones I could hang on a wall. The one with your riding partner up ahead and the multiple little rises and the one with the turtle are especially cool!

Angeles National Forest on Saturday morning. High 50s when I left my house, high 70s by the time I took this in the mountains. Beautiful day out on the new Canyon. 35 miles round trip with 3,200 feet of climbing.
