I've considered getting a mountain bike in the years since but I worried that I'd only go faster through the trails and that may not be wise. But then I began thinking about how much more control I'd have at those faster speeds with both front and rear suspension and a bike meant for that kind of riding.

And with that thought in mind, I pulled the trigger on my first MTB today! I had my heart set on a Trek Fuel EX 9.7 and amazingly enough, there was one at a LBS. They also had an Orbea Oiz M20 in my size for comparison. I took them both out to the lot (the trails are muddy and closed here in MN) and jumped a few curbs and also found some speed bumps to ride over. It's all I had. After 3 separate turns on each bike, the decision was a no-brainer for me. I chose the Orbea. Better components and more than 3 lbs (1.92 stones) lighter for nearly the same price.

I should mention that there's quite a wait if one has to order either bike from the manufacturer. Trek is out to the end of the year while my Orbea would've had me waiting until late September.

I was just out in the garage sitting on it like a little kid with a new bike. New Bike Day is fun!

Fizik shoes

Really helpful Reuben - thanks for the info. I haven't found any locally, so ordering a couple of pairs/sizes like you did is going to have to be the way.

The Shimanos are 43, so I tried the Overcurve R5 in 42. Way too small, notably in forefoot width. By then the coronavirus had disrupted just about everything, and cycling shoes were one of millions of items that became hard to find. It wasn't a big deal for me since the Shimanos worked OK, even if they might be a tad too large.

Recently Fizik seems to have received a huge shipment from its manufacturers, and everything's back in stock. I ordered 42.5 from Wiggle and 43 direct from Fizik.

The 42.5 were a bit short in length, so I'm sending them back and keeping the 43. Bottom line, I'm ended up wearing the same exact size in both Shimano RP200 and Fizik Tempo Overcurve R5.

Here's the original thread.

I like their looks as well, and they're $150 USD instead of $400. My feet are pretty ordinary, so I can probably wear almost anything after adjusting for fit differences.

Post of the Month!

Rim or disc brakes? Neither!

Shimano, Campagnolo, or SRAM? None of the above!

Electronic or mechanical shifting? Ha!

Internal or external cable routing? Pfft!

SPD, Time, or Speedplay? Gitouttahere!

For what it's worth I paid $0 to ship the 42s back to Fizik, but $20 to ship the 42.5 pair back to Wiggle. That's not necessarily a big deal if you want such an item, especially given the kabosh the pandemic has put on things, not to mention shipping back and forth across an ocean.

Fizik wanted photographic proof that they were unblemished before they'd even issue a return label. Again, not unreasonable. Put on socks, try them on, walk on carpet - I did this with all 3 pairs. Don't scuff them up or even put cleats on them if you can avoid it.

can't help myself, ordered another 6...

my favorite width for road use - 27mm, 320TPI, even lower price at $29, take extra $20 off total using code CLEAR2021 (which further lower the price per tire to $26, crazy for a tire of this quality), free shipping, no sales tax, 2-day DHL

what is not to like?

At my current stockpile, I guess I will be riding these tires well into 2030!
