Viewing inserted pictures

Just curious.
I usually have to log in to be able to view any pics inserted into a thread. It just shows up as an inserted file name. But now and then I can view the pic before I am logged in.

Any idea why this is?

There's two ways to post pictures in threads.

1) By "attaching" them using this:
Attached Images
File Type: jpg Screen shot 2013-11-29 at 1.02.11 PM.jpg (20.7 KB, 748 views)

Or...

2) By imbedding the image using a web link via this:

Method 1) you upload images from your computer or an url, and those cannot be seen unless you are logged-in. Method 2) your image needs to be stored online, and you need a link to it, and these can be seen logged-in or not.

There's one more trick. You attach a picture to the thread. Then open the picture in a new window/tab. Edit the post. Copy the URL and then link to the attached picture in your post. Save changes.

This allows those not logged in to view the attached picture because there's a link to it (even though the link is to the attached picture).

This is why you sometimes see the same picture embedded in a post but also attached to it. Whoever did that has taken some effort, albeit minor, to make the post readable to non-logged in users.

First I attach a picture to the reply. I hit "submit reply" to post it.

*edit
Now I edit the picture. The attached picture is below the text. I right click (or on a Mac double-touch-click) and "Copy Image Address".

I'll insert the image here so it's clear that it's an edit. In real I'd put it up higher, where ever appropriate in the original post.

Image inserted here:

Screenshots of the action:

Step 1, where I attach the picture:

Step 2, where I link to the same picture by editing the reply:

How about control-click… that's the equivalent of a right click on a PC.

Any shortcuts for posting pictures from modern iPhones with their HEIC format? Seems I need to convert HEIC->JPG, then upload. Anyone come up with a quicker way to do this?

Or, are you guys posting from Taptalk which may make uploading pictures faster (not used, but assume this to be the case).

Please let me know. and TIA

funny seeing this old thread brought back and I have no idea what this image is that one of the mods edited into my post. Replacing a broken image link I imagine.
