What to do with a week in Dubuque, IA
What better way to get to know a place...
(Having last pedaled into town on RAGBRAI 2010) But to stop in the local shop and get A feel for the downtown culture, Rent a bike for the afternoon And put some miles in Out on the trail. Bike world is awesome— Parrish, the owner since 1973 takes great care of the community Each and every day And the newest arrival to town in the greatest need... Of a really great, icy winter ride  27 degrees, mixed snow and sleet right now But mostly cloudy, damp, then dry then an all out downpour this afternoon. Perfect. My first day EVER riding a TREK! You’ve also got to love that feeling 10 or so miles from town When you snap a photo and the phone shuts down.

Still commuting on steel
But my wife bought me a mountain bike frame
Yesterday and told me to build it up however I like! Her goal is to have us both ride the Dakota-50! ...this year... Any guesses as to what she picked out for me?!? Here’s my ride for today The trees are aftermath from a tornado 🌪 This past June...

Since the start of Winter I've ridden quite a bit.
Lots of rides in harsh conditions, close to 1,700 miles all outdoors since Winter began back in December, with 1,200+ in 2019. We're in a bit of a cold snap again here, but I still ride home from work a couple of times a week. Plus a lot on the weekend. I rode home on Monday, mostly in the dark, 26 miles. And yesterday I rode home as well. The shortest way is about 18 miles, but I usually ride more. Even when it's frosty... I'm most tired of the 100 or so elk hanging around my rural subdivision. They sometimes sneak in at 2:00 a.m. and if I don't check for elk quickly, they'll leave me about 100 pounds of poop to clean up. Every seen elk poop? It's like dry black marbles. I'm afraid it's full of weed seeds, so I vacuum it up with a shop vac. I had at least 150 lbs a few weeks ago. I use a bird banger pistol to scare them off. The last time I did that, they stampeded over my rail fence and broke off several 2x6 rails.

The only thing I miss about living in NE Texas is the winter riding on the NE Texas Trail which was a rail-trail. I could ride as often as I wanted on my gravel or cross bike and usually did 140+ miles a week through the short daylight days. I used a headlight to extend the riding. Now I'm in NW Arizona with a road bike clamped into a KICKR.
