Double top tubes can improve the frame's torsional stiffness (presuming standard diameter/gauge tubing is used), and has long been used on larger frames and/or for heavier riders. In particular, big frames for big riders can be prone to shimmying, and double top tubes can help mitigate this.

it's interesting that no one has mentioned the double top tube Rivs that Grant designed and sold a number of years ago.. I remember right, they were specifically designed for strength (since Grant likes to over-engineer everything) and meant for off-pavement riding (gravel bikes before they were a thing)..
they always just looked a little too goofy for me.. (they also made a diagonal 2nd tube bike as well)

After looking through the pictures on the link that Nick attached initially, I'm nearly liking the green version on the last photo of the for sale link. Colors and graphics definitely not as abominable as the yelllow/dark flame job Nick posted.
I can also appreciate the historical nod to IF's early days. And a sterling head badge might be a badge of honor. I still don't think I'd find one in 52 cm size. I do wish the pic of the green and black model included the stem/handlebar/brake lever setup. Last edited by bironi; 03-05-2024 at 11:47 PM. Reason: stupidity |

I see your Haro Master and raise it a Redline RL20II. One of my teenage dream bikes.

admittedly have not read through the this whole thread so I may have missed some pertinent info, but why would someone build a bike with a double top tube? Larger riders? Dated tech / practices. interesting stuff.
I dont mind those riv like rigs, but that IF, yikes not my cup of tea.

His bike may say Redline but the pants show who the Master is. Just messing, my Redline was stolen and am still sore about it! I’ve had a few Haro masters over the years and is my favorite bike - my first one my mom bought me for Christmas and to this day no idea how she afforded it. You remember weird things in life, but I can remember the smell of that Master on Christmas morning! The shop put some strong oil on the chain and my house smelled so good (to me at least)

In terms of bikes that look good with multiple top tubes, I'll add the mantis valkyrie to the fold.
Both as a double diamond bike: https://theradavist.com/a-second-spi...rame-valkyrie/ And as an elevated chainstay version: https://www.pinkbike.com/news/now-th...-valkyrie.html courtesy of pink bike |

Looks like AHEARNE has built a number of double top tube bikes, https://www.flickr.com/photos/ahearnecycles/albums/

Based on the linked catalog, the bike makes sense as a flat/riser bar klunker tribute. The rim brakes are an odd choice for such a concept... but the minute you throw drop bars on it, all initial reference is lost and it looks like a backward Profile Champ Pro bmx frame.
