Campagnolo Chorus Freehub/Lockring Woes

Hi Everyone,

This is my first posting, a pal of mine on the board recommended that I ask for some advice from the community, so here I am.

I am in the process of a new bike build and have hit a roadblock with the rear wheel. The lockring for the cassette does not thread onto the freehub which seems to be a common occurrence. Went to LBS, they said could be lockring, could be freehub... an that I could replace either but should start with some gentle persuasion to get beyond the threads that are not catching. Spent a while tonight persuading with no success... I don't think such nice bits and pieces deserve a hack/kludge/square peg in a round hole.

Here are the particulars of what I have on hand sourced from various sellers:
Campagnolo Chorus hubset (9 to 11 cassette)
Mavic open pro SUP clincher rims, 36 holes
Campagnolo Record 10 speed cassette with & lock ring

I think that the cause of the problem is that the freehub threads are toast

My plan is to replace both the lockring and the freehub, but I'm unsure of what I need in terms of part numbers for lockring and freehub. The freehub job looks doable but it may be worthwhile to let LBS get the job.

You have a 9s wheel, yes a 10 and 11s cogset will fit but the lockring with the 10s cogset is too large. Need a lockring with '9speed' on it. Steel axle, 1997, early 1998 hub. 10s happened in 2000, aluminum axle hubs.

Jim@vecchios.com has them, about $26.

I think you need a 26 mm lockring, specifically. I believe there were 26 and 27 for 9 speed. Trying to thread a 27mm lockring onto that hub will just spin and not catch the threads.

I had someone tell me they have a 27 mm lockring that's labeled "9 speed". Every one I've handled marked 9 speed has been 26 mm. I would specify 26 mm when ordering to be clear, or part number CS-201 (12-13T) or CS-301 (11T).

I know you can currently buy 9 speed cassettes that come with 27mm lockrings, but the lockring isn't labeled 9 speed. That's why I mentioned it.

I guess you stayed away from Dura Ace, or haven't decided to move up to 11.

All, thanks for the clarification about the different lock rings (and that 26 mm) is what I'm looking for...

As far as the Shimano (got that too and been happy with it) thing goes: I could get yet another hobby and go whole hog and pick up one of these babies:

I was in the campy and Shimano 10 speed world but at the moment I am in the 7 and 9 speed world Shimano/Campy about 50/50. I have some nice alloy Chorus stuff that was supposed to go on a Taylor custom but old timers here know how that went south.

Yes, as some folks previously mentioned, you will need a 26.0mm 9 speed Campagnolo lockring. Specifically 26.0mm as Campagnolo made both 27.0mm and 26.0mm with the "9 Speed" markings on it. I have gotten several of each over the years and still have a few of each to positively verify.

I would like to see one of the 27 mm lockrings that has the 9 speed marking if you can find one. I have several 27s that are marked "UD 9/10 type", but have never seen one that says "9 speed".

Ebay sellers often don't know what they're selling and will often decline to measure them. I've always considered anything that says "Brev Int" to be 8 speed, the ones that say "9 speed" to be 26 mm, and everything else to be 27. I know there were some Ti ones (26 and 27), but don't know what they look like either.
