i buy a ton of Bontrager bike tubes. Not much else. Never had the cachet of Specialized in my book. I do buy specialized bike shoes and helmets , but again not much else. Seemed to be the original intent of Bontrager was to lower product costs for Trek. Now with this new helmet maybe they're trying to build the brand more as a stand-a-lone entity. Having the products sold outside of Trek dealers would be part of that plan.

They can, any of us can. But their actions here spoke otherwise.
But anyway, bike forum not politics so I'm outa this one. No need to stir things up. |

Didn't take long
I was in my local REI looking at some tail lights on Wednesday. I saw quite a few Cannondale bikes, but nothing from Bontrager. This morning, I did a search for a Bontrager Flare tail light and what pops up in my Google search? The light is now available for pick up at my local REI.
REI didn't waste any time getting these product lines into their stores. |

Why should a random consumer get 20% off anything? Being how overhead costs are vs. cost of doing business.
You're laundering $, the margins on bike stuff is terrible |

Not a random consumer - a Co-op member.
You can join the Co-op or be a “random consumer” and are still allowed to shop there. Your choice. BK

stopped at the local REI myself today to use my 20% off on a bag i have wanted.
noticed a LOT more c'dale on the sales floor. Couple months ago seemed like the majority of bikes were REI's new founded house brand of "CO-OP" bikes, but now the majority is definitely cannondale. Also saw some bonty accessories popping up. this makes sense that REI would negotiate with a brand for better deals on basic cycling stuff. lights, lower end kit, helmets shoes, bottle cages, etc. REI is a pretty big chain so they have some leverage for sure.

we know you run a business and think you're the smartest guy in the room with regard to cycling retail, but "laundering money" - a little over the top here, no peanut?

Is this a bullying attempt from a moderator
The best margin you'll get from just about any distributor is 50 points...that's if you buy a zillion units on their terms...which will bankrupt you 20% discount on a current product is the road to ruin Not sure exactly what you do in life...but I'm pretty sure no discounts are involved . You gotta eat Last edited by peanutgallery; 03-23-2019 at 04:24 PM. |

I get what you're saying, but what does that have to do with "money laundering" ?? also, color me dense here, but what do you mean by "points", is that percent margin ?

If you buy a tube for $4 the MSRP is $8. AKA; Keystone, 50 points. Out of your $4 profit is overhead, employees and where you want to be in life. When you randomly discount by 20% that cuts into your end. Not sure why anyone is so quick to go there

Not sure what you do in life, but I'm sure it doesn't randomly include getting discounted by 20%. That would get you canned. I don't REI, but a 20% discount is just getting items off the floor, doesn't cover overhead
