Hell of Hunterdon
For those of you in the NE corridor, esp between Philly and NYC - this one is a can't miss. 81.5 miles/5229 vertical feet, mostly scenic paved roads and some modest dirt. You can do it on any bike with 25's or larger. 28 to 30 probably optimum. Great support, rest stops and meal/beer afterwards, plus swag. Fills up fast. Same promoter (Kermesse Sport) runs a series with three other classics-themed fondos that you can find on bikereg.

I am registered for this years' HoH.
This is a well run event. Been doing this event for the last 3-consecutive years now. No need for CX bike. I run a road bike with 25mm tires. |

Fun route. Takes in some great road although a few contrived to join the nice gravel stretches. I used to ride these roads all the time. Can be done on 25's for sure but 28 or maybe even 32's would be my preference. Caution descending Hemp Road at mile 50.6, sharp turn and plunge down to the creek on rough gravel....no biggie for paceliners.

+1. Caution on that metal bridge when wet. Having said that, Do not apply brakes on the metal bridge. You will be sorry.

FWIW, Floyd Landis riding it and speaking at the starting point (Princeton Elks Lodge) the night before. Curiosity alone may get me to attend. Doing the ride even though undertrained with sucky winter weather.

I do some riding on those roads a few times each year - it is a great area for cycling. But call me a wuss, I usually stick to the smoother paved roads - even trying to avoid the nasty version of chipseal, which is one drawback to some roads in that area (e.g. Pleasant Valley).

You have one of the nicest place to ride.
I will not blame you if you try to avoid the gravel roads. I would also avoid it even if I am on a car. LOL. If it is a singletrack lined with trees, then it is not as boring. |

BUMP!
I'm headed down to this year's Hell of Hunterdon, really psyched to get some outdoor riding in. Snowbanks are still huge in Montpelier VT - gonna feel tropical. Anyone else riding this this year? |

I can't make it this year. Pre-rode about 3/4 of the course today. Weather was spectacular. I can say without hesitation or exaggeration that the dirt roads are in better shape than the blacktop in NJ. Smooth sailing on the dirt, for sure.
This course is ideal for a fast road bike on 28's.

Looking forward to this years ride, just mounted some 25mm continental gatorskins and hoping for a no flat ride! I agree with angry, some of our local NY roads are in bad shape this year, maybe a bit too much salting?

Planning to be out there tomorrow. Bringing my Super X disc with 33mm Strada Bianca. Hoping for a smooth ride and no flats.

Wow epic day at the HoH yesterday! I put in a few extra miles missing a turn at around mile 48, the gravel sections were spread out well enough that made me think we road more gravel miles than posted. My biggest concern was not flatting as my conti gator skins held up all day, especially one section were the gravel was rim deep and chunky bit overkill IMO. Well stocked rest stops great weather and post ride food and beer was a welcome site. Overall a well oiled machine!
