New York still wasn't ready to issue Real ID compliant drivers licenses at my last renewal. I purchased a passport card when I renewed my passport last year to have a valid Real ID card for travel purposes until my next drivers license is due in 2025.

I just went with a passport card when I renewed my passport last month. My DL is good for a few more years. The passport card from what I have been told will work for crossing into Mexico and Canada via car, walk or bike and domestic flights. It will also work when I fish out of San Diego in Mexican waters.

Just a note...at the border, everyone in the car has to have Nexus to use the line.

Same, but waiting for DHS to approve my Global Entry online renewal by its Dec expiration (or schedule an appt for me to come in, if that's what they require). So far, my fee is paid, and application is 'pending' now for some months.....

Pro tip for next time, you can make a DMV appointment online ahead of time and walk right in.
I tried to make an appointment. The earliest was more than 2 months out.

The most depressing thing for me was how much older I look in my new driver’s license photo.

OT: do you have and enhanced ID?

Now is the the time to take action as the closer to the deadline the more people will queue up

For California:

As steve mentioned there are three things to do online on the DMV site

1) make an appointment. First available can be 2-3 months out

2) complete your application renewal online and note your reference number

3) go to the real ID section of the dmv site and walk through the documentation required checklist. For my daughter I had to bring something that connects her to me since it's my name not hers on the mortgage and property tax invoices to prove residency

Note if you apply for the real ID at the same time as your license renewal there will not be an extra charge.

My license expires next September so I elected to pay the charge and get the real ID this year simply to avoid the longer lines as the deadline got closer.

I was in and out of the DMV in

Minnesota nearly got itself into the same situation as NJ. Our DMV did get their act together in time, so I do have an enhanced state ID.

OP: actually, DHS, Commerce, and Veteran's Affairs have increases in trumpski's 2020 proposed budget, FWIW, so for now, I'll stick with my original 'gov't is just acting slow and goofy' theory....
