When will the Tour and Olympics finally be cancelled?

Cancellation of both events looks inevitable now. How long can the ASO and IOC hold out before they make the announcements?

Canada and Australia have already withdrawn from the Olympics if they're held this year.

it's a good question.

unless it's indoor or done "virtually" many athletes are barred from training right now, i would think many major teams would not to to TDF even if it was held.

i'm pretty sure both will have to cancel.

Yup. Here's a video of Vincenzo Nibali - in Italian - he's down to short 2 hour rides (lives in Switzerland where riding is still not curtailed) but as there isn't a calendar of races he's "not really training".

Also comments on the need not to change the nature of grand tours (some had suggested that GTs been made shorter but still held).

Obviously recommending that everyone focus on the Covid-19 crisis and not think about racing....

Canadians have announced that they will not send athletes unless the Olympics are postponed--they're asking for a year's postponement:

The IOC says the decision on whether to delay the Games will be made within four weeks, but it does seem like they're heading for postponement.

Even if the spread did slow down by then, holding the games could make it worse again worldwide.

With 2 countries stating they're out, others are sure to follow.

While typically an upbeat person, it will very difficult for either of these to remain scheduled.

Australians are doing the same thing. The Olympics isn't going to happen this year. I feel for all the athletes who've been training for years to peak in 4 months, but it isn't going to happen.

They should run a virtual Tour -- 21 stages on Zwift.

Speaking of staying inside, like so many others in the pro peloton, Astana’s Laurens De Vreese is spending a lot of time on the trainer right now. On Friday, he really kicked it up a notch: The 31-year-old Belgian spent more than 11 hours riding on Zwift en route to 368.94 kilometers.

The workout – whose title included the words “#OliverNaessenChallenge” [sic], possibly in reference to a 365-kilometer ride that Naesen put in earlier this week – took De Vreese on numerous virtual laps of the Yorkshire Worlds course. With a weighted average power of 212 watts, he burned nearly 9,000 calories along the way.
So it can be done.

I didn't say it can't be done...

I'm still saying it's next to worthless.. it's PR for Zwift basically. They would have to shell out some $$$ and the results mean nothing, because Zwift data is garbage for racing.

I hope the IOC steps down off their arrogant platform and makes it official.

Interestingly, AFL/Footie (Australian Rules Football) kicked their season off last week.

Live games but no spectators in 85,000 seat stadiums.

Just the teams, officials, and TV crew. Interviews are 2-3 meters apart or via cell phone.

It makes for an interesting broadcast, but it is the only live team sport event I am aware of that is still running.

I am glad I’m a fan because reruns of old sporting events and virtual events aren’t doing it for me.
