Dura-Ace 9-speed shifter problem
I have had a 2000 Specialized M4, 2 x 9, with full Dura-Ace for about 6 months. Recently the right shifter stopped upshifting. I put a degreaser in it. No joy. I poured boiling water through it twice. No joy.

I think most folks think if the cleanse/re-lube doesn't work your shifters are shot. 9 speed barends are pretty easy to find if you don't find some brifters. I think you can use 10 speed shifters as long as you also use 10 speed cassette.
Guys who REALLY know will chime in soon. |

Spray it full of spray Kroil and run it through the motions. Then do it again. If no joy, its probably dead.

This. If dead 10 speed will work. New chain and cassette needed along with 10 speed shifter. The grease gets old and dry in those shifters and needs to be flushed out. Low temperatures makes it worse.

If the kroil flush doesn't work, (it should), I've got a couple sets of 9 speed shifters, probably Ultegra.

New 10-speed chain and cassette is probably wise with a 10 shifter, but there's the slight chance the new chain won't love the cranks.
BITD when 9-speed D-A first came out there was a cable trick to make it work with an 8-speed wheel: you route the cable at a right angle on the closer-to-loop side of the derailleur fixing bolt instead of behind it (Google for Sheldon Brown pic which shows this). Maybe it works to make a 10 shifter work on 9, or maybe you buy the other stuff after. Couldn't hurt to try! Edit: Here's the link. Scroll down to "alternate cable routing". https://www.sheldonbrown.com/drivetrain-mixing.shtml Last edited by Joe Remi; 01-13-2019 at 08:49 PM. |

Common failure/problem and if flushing doesn't fix it, it is done. Some say they can take these apart and fix them but even if they can, there are no small parts available from shimano, never has been. These are in the 'BIC lighter' category. New cogset and chain using a 10s shifter..rear Der will work fine. And 10s chain no problemo with 9s crankset.

Yes, but isn't there some difference in the design that means you can't use a 10 speed cassette on 8-9 speed hubs?

If the wheel takes both 8 and 9 speed it will also accept a 10 speed cassette.

Your hoods will also start to deteriorate at some point if they haven't already.
Good luck finding 9 speed hoods. If you do I would expect them to be at a premium. |
