I don't know why people are surprised or upset by this.
This is the norm when sucking the teet of software updated technology. Anyone with a smartphone knows this. Sonos is probably the most famous recent example. Cars are all headed this way... it's going to happen more often. |

Agree w/ above and the new Garmin Rally options are good as well. I’ve had good experiences with stages too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I don't have much to add other than I'm chuckling about a bunch of OCD triathletes who "can't ride" for the supposed 12 day window that the powermeter won't work. That it's a "paperweight." It's not a paperweight... it's still a functioning crank.

yeah, but they can't figure out how to ride without POWER!! or at least their Strava feeds will be shamed when they simply upload it from their phone....arrgh, the horror!!

when I bought my Speedvagen a decade ago, I deliberately decided to not install a computer or power meter and have stayed the course. There is something beautiful about having a no-tech bike . Well, a bunch of carbon, I guess.
Anyways, it sucks for those who use these Pioneer thingies... |

Wonder if the day will come when versions of electronic shifting will just be stuck in gear

yup
It's not a purchase (even though it is) they essentially want you to lease the product , for the life of the product. Right to repair is far more important than people think. Which is why corporations put so much money into fighting it, but try to keep it quiet. |

It's the "XAAS" (everything as a service) model, all the industrial companies are doing it already, in order to get the revenue stream the software companies enjoy.. We're trying to do that with power switchyards and everything below. More to come for the bike biz, I'm sure.

Bricked
He is talking about the headunit/computer being bricked, not the powermeter

And waaaaaaaah! I can't upload via WiFi anymore? Big deal. And you know what else? I got the first and second email, so that "first email not going out" didn't happen to everyone. Didn't everyone pooh-pooh Pioneer not too long ago due to the "inaccuracies" of the asymmetric design and now we're upset that we don't have 100% functionality of that (substandard) power meter? Also, if you want to poke fun at how poorly written the email was, you should have known what you were getting in when you read through the power meter's owner's manual. It was the verbal equivalent of a Tamiya Grasshopper instruction manual. And it was Shimano 9100. Outdated and old by now anyway. No great loss. 9200 or nothing. |

You bring a good related subject to the surface that not many people think about. I've only personally been exposed to this with electronics, especially with Apple Products. iFixIt, a source of repair information and tools has been a cohesive source of info on the subject for me. https://www.ifixit.com/Right-to-Repair/Intro |

An all those fully wireless group sets and wired group sets requiring special batterie. What happens in a few years when they are not updated or batteries made.

right to repair is being fought vocally by the computer repair industry but it's the precedent for literally everything. The industry lobbyists don't have any solid argument. They are paid to fight rtr, and even they can't think of a good reason. But this is politics... logic and consumer rights have very little to do with it. |

Who knows where we'll be in 50 years, but at so far, Sram and Shimano have kept their batteries forward and backward compatible.
