Does anyone own a quonset hut? Anyone built one??

We have been considering building a garage, and quonset huts seem to be popping up in my feed (bloody ads). But truthfully, they are interesting! the price is right, they seem pretty durable, plus they can handle wind, and we have lots of that. And...some forums say that with a few strong hands, you can assemble them yourself.

Anyone have a quonset as their primary garage or out building? Anyone built one?

I have built one. Not complicated. You need a good slab or foundation that is level to get everything in line. They are hard to insulate well and can be very dark if you don't put in a lot of windows the ends. To build one alone is a stretch unless you have a good mobile scaffolding system and will need to set up rigging to move the panels around.

Fair enough, the 1/2 circular steel building was invented by a Canadian during WWI.

A quonset is very efficient structurally and economically.
The reduced height at the sides might not make it the best volume for a garage, though, depending on the other intended uses, unless one went with a 1.5/2 story height, which might not be allowed, or a much wider geometry than a standard garage width, which might not be feasible. The usable lateral space obviously reduces very radically, quickly, on a standard quonset "unit".

My Dad had 2 that he bought surplus. Last time I was back in England he'd finally bent to my Mother's wish to get rid of them.

As in the United States? They are all over the place... I’ve been in countless structures of this type. They cover the US from Texas to Minnesota/North Dakota.

Most of them were/are used for equipment and animals but I know several people that have used them for primary parking.
