all city nature boi #sscx

About 10 years ago I had one of these and really liked the bike. I got caught up in getting a custom cx bike made and ended up selling it to help cover some of the cost. Oddly, despite the crappy TRP brakes, it was a much more fun bike to ride and I lowkey regretted selling it. Here it was in all its glory (Municipal Waste is gonna f*ck you up!):

Super impractical with tubulars, drop bars, etc. for the type of riding I enjoy these days.

Fast forward to the 2021 pandemic. This frameset popped up on Portland Craiglist but I couldn't cop it due to be in socal. After a few weeks, it fell off the face of the internet. did it sell? did the seller change their mind? was it donated? did it go in the dumpster? who knows.

About a month ago, it suddenly resurfaced on fleabay and I wasted no time making it happen.

After it showed up, I sat down and came up with a "dream list" of parts I wanted for this bike. Usually my bikes are cannibalized for parts and then sold off, but I had nothing except the tires sitting in my parts bin. Pretty much a blank slate. Thanks to quite a few Paceliners, I was able to source every single part I wanted for this build. I really wanted to have a "baller" build on a sort of average off-the-shelf frame, that I knew would be fun to ride and I wouldn't baby. Thank you all for digging through your parts and making it come together.

Here it is:

Build:
46cm Nature Boi
Chris King headset
Enve cantilever fork
Enve SWP handlebars
ESI custom Mudfoot grips
Paul Cantilever levers
Paul Minimoto brakes
Simworks brass hardware
White Industries M30 crankset
White Industries BSA bottom bracket
White Industries T11 hubs laced to HED Belgium+
Good Year Connector 40c tubeless tires
King Cage titanium cages
Chris King SS cog
Zipp SL seatpost
Zipp SL stem
Fizik Aliante saddle
Weight: 17.8lbs complete -- not too shabby

It's cool that the frame eventually showed up again on E-bay for you to get a second chance at it. Congrats, that purple is really deep, and those are great parts.

Is the Nature Boy everything that you remember? I've always wanted to try one. And 46cm would be my size too.

Great build! I always wanted the Speedvagen ss cx (canti version) after seeing those in the PDX races, sweet Poler kit too!

Thanks all.

I feel that the tubeless wheels, bigger tires, better brakes make it even more fun to ride than I remember it being. It’s comfortable, the fit is spot on and it is super stable which is important to me on the singletrack I ride around here.

The one thing is lacks is more rear tire clearance. It can likely fit a 42c in there, but there would be hardly any room. We don’t get much mud here anyway, just something worth noting.

That looks like a fun bike. I also really like your component choices. If something like this popped up in my size for the right price I would be very tempted.

Great story and nice build! I like the flat bar idea, going to have to try that myself. much more practical for my commuting needs.

I'd been wanting one for years as well, but canti 61s were hard to come by a few years after All City went disc. One working Wednesday, much like today, one popped up on Craigslist 20 miles away. Made contact with the seller, jumped in the car, hit the bank, met him at his house, paid asking and never looked back. I love that bike.

Good note on that. I knew off the bat it would be a flatbar sscx bike. I could never ride a drop bar cx bike again. just not my thing.

Thanks ya'll

Been riding this one quite a bit with all the rain we have been getting. So far, no complaints to speak of.

Saw that on eBay and would've been really tempted if it had the steel fork. Nice that it went to a PLer.

Sweet rig. Always loved these, would love to own one someday.

Funny, I would have passed if it had the steel fork. Different strokes I suppose. I just rode to catch the sunset on a Friday night. It’s really fun.

Get one if you can find one!

Hell yeah. A rim brake version of these frames is a great choice. Love that purple. I definitely enjoy a good all-city. Good build.
