Caught a bit of a crosswind on my morning ride ...

Wish I could post a video so you could hear the roar. He powered up and blew about half the leaves off that tree. Would've put me down too, but I heard him from half a mile away. Had to stop and admire.

Neat!

(But I prefer the sound of the radial engines.)

Cadillac of the skies. My favorite of WWII was the Corsair but..can't beat the sound. Flaps down and canopy open but...still gives me goose bumps.

Flew a MATS Connie from Maguire AFB to the Azores in 1960..we even got there with 3 of the 4 engines running. Dad was USAF..spent the next 4 years there.

Allison and RR Griffon V-12..similar but different beasts.

It's amazing how loud planes are. I was ~ 20' away from a Fouga Magister as it powered up, and even with ear protection, it was incredibly loud.

Given Kirk's Terraplane that rides on the 'terra,' should we call the contraption in the OP's picture an aero-plane? Think of it. We here on the Paceline can claim that we originated the name. How cool is that?!

My uncle flew one of those P-51's out of England during WWII. He was a mild mannered guy who we young nephews sort of mocked much of the time. Little did we know what a badass he was. As an adult I did some research into his battle missions and now (too late since he passed away some time ago) have a new level of respect for him.

He was probably not too big either because big guys didn't fit in fighter plane cockpits.

Nope...average sized guy. He stayed in aviation all his life, although with rotor aircraft- worked at Piasecki helicopters in Philadelphia which morphed into Boeing Vertol. Was an engineer on the Chinook / Sea Knight twin rotor aircraft program until retirement.

I'm biting.

What are the other two.

And can you find one of them at the Hill AFB Museum?
