agree. my wife and i both have our phones set this way. i feel like i have some self control, but it's just easier not to even have it cross your mind if all alerts are disabled when behind the wheel.

Driving is a privilege but we treat it as a right.

Drive drunk and get caught? Hit someone while texting? You get to use Uber or Lyft for the rest of your life.

Yes, I know that will lead to more people driving without a license.

Here's an image of approximately where the cyclist was struck, heading south on 12th Avenue at Belmont Drive: https://goo.gl/maps/715aMFyUpuTffHc59.

What's more, the driver presumably had very little experience behind the wheel, it was still dark at the time, and the cyclist was using both a headlight and taillight.

https://www.thegazette.com/crashes/t...drew-pavlovec/

"Kron said that around 5:58 a.m. April 6, the driver was southbound in the 2400 block of 12th Avenue in Coralville when she hit Pavlovec from behind. Pavlovec was in the traffic lane and using both a headlight and taillight, Kron said."

The big tech firms would NEVER allow phones to be disabled while driving. Which is unfortunate because the problem is only going to get worse. The new thing I've seen lately is people FaceTiming while driving. WHAT ?!?!

Plus if you go to Instagram or Facebook, you'll see hundreds if not thousands of examples of people recording themselves and talking WHILE driving.

We live in such a self consumed, self absorbed world. It's really sad.
Not new my friend, not new at all.

This is exactly how my best friend, Robin Ames, was killed while riding last year. Struck from behind by a distracted driver using her phone. He had a varia, it was daytime, and it was a straight stretch of road. None of it mattered.

Why go after "big tech" but not "big auto"? It would make things even safer if cars were restricted from going over 25 mph. There are fewer auto deaths now than there were 40 years ago, before anyone had a cell phone. Cell phones don't make people speed, and speed is the biggest risk factor in driving.

I do the same - and agree with with this statement.

Hmmmm.......I guess you're on to something. I guess they could geofence speed zones then put a chip in cars that wouldn't allow the car to go over the speed limit for that particular zone but that'll never happen, just like banning phones in a moving car will never happen.

I disagree with your argument about speed being biggest risk factor...I think distraction is WAY more dangerous than speed. But that's just my opinion.

I recently read "A Deadly Wandering". It interweaves the story of a double fatality car crash caused by a texting driver, with what the research teaches us about human attention. Great book. Phones should be banned in vehicles, period, IMO.

The big tech firms believe the solution is self-driving cars. Unfortunately, the technology that is drawing the drivers attention away from the road is advancing faster than the technology that would allow the driver not to have to pay attention to the road.

Will there ever be self-driving brodozers with push-button coal-rolling capability?
