Columbus Day Weekend Minnewaska/Mohonk Forum Gravel Ride

OK, who's interested? Would need to know which day works for the majority of those interested. Foliage should be out in force and it will be a long day of great gravel riding!

For those who art wondering . . . NO, we will NOT be "riding" up the hill on the Smiley Carriage Road!

So roll call of interest and day/time preferences. I'm going to recommend meeting very early at the West Trapps lot to get spaces. Entry is $20 per person, BUT . . . money helps support the non-profit Mohonk preserve and that lets us ride anywhere in Mohonk or Minnewaska with no permit problems.

Here's a link to photos from our June ride last year. Now imagine this with fall color! . . .

A lovely place to ride, but emphasis should be on EARLY arrival. Since COVID the entries to Mohonk and Minnewaska close out quickly. Usually on any weekend and especially a holiday, lines form long before the gates open.

Good point! . . .

Any suggestions on how early? I don't particularly want to have to get there at 5am.

An alternative could be to park as far away as New Paltz and ride the new trail up to Mohonk from there. Or we could even park somewhere in the valley on the west side and ride up the highway from there. If we rode straight into Minnewaska it would be free as far as I know, since they charge a $10 per car fee.

We found out the hard way last time that you cannot ride up the Smiley Carriage Road from the Ellenville Town Park. It's not really a "road" for the whole distance. But it might make a good place to park and ride up the highway. I also know of one other place that would be a steep climb, but doable.

From what I was told you still have to pay to ride, when you pay for parking you are also paying to go into the park and not just for a parking spot. Now, will a ranger stop you and check? Maybe not but fyi. I did get stopped and had paid but had nothing to prove that I did, she told me I was suppose to get something but told me not a big deal and to carry on with my ride.

This summer, I've gotten to the Minnewaska entrance at 8:30 and had to sit in lines on 55. Maybe a bit later at Mohonk Preserve because it is more expensive (per person rather than per car). I think that 8:30 should be a target. If you park in New Paltz you could ride up.

Does Saturday the 10th work . . .

. . . for a preliminary date? That gives us Sunday for a rain date if needed.

Another option is to park at the rail trail in Kerhonkson and ride up to Minnewaska.

Notwithstanding figuring out the parking . . .

. . . how does Saturday the 10th sound? I'm assuming we'd have to meet down there early.

Just talked to a friend near Minnewaska . . .

Any takers?

If any one wants to do this on this coming Saturday, we need to get details set up of meeting place and time.

West Trapps lot? Minnewaska lot? How early?

Thanks.

Saturday's are a bit tough for me to make it up to Minnewaska, I'd be up for a Sunday ride in the next week or so. Enjoy the ride!!

OK, it's set . . .

If you want to join in, meet at the Minnewaska Peterskill lot on Rt. 44/55 at 9am this Sunday. October 18, at 9am when the park opens. I was there this past Sunday at 9am there was still plenty of parking at 9, and they in fact opened the gates at 8:30. Meet by the small building with the ranger HQ and bathrooms.

Weather is looking good! High in the upper 50's and only 20% chance of rain. Way better than Saturday 50% chance. We'll ride up the hill to the main park area on the carriage road and have many miles of trails ahead of us and some stunning views from the heights. Gravel bike is perfect, MTB also works fine. Friendly pace!

Need directions or have questions, let me know here or PM me!
