Assos hasn't used the orange pad for a long time. Way older than 6 or 7 years.

obviously it depends on how frequently you use them, and the detergent you use does also matter, but regardless of all of that, i dont think you get much more than 5 years max out of bibs before the material is not as supple and springy as intended.

if your go-to bibs are >6-7 years old, it's time to retire them to short ride duty or toss them. treat yourself to some new kit for 2020!

IME if the foam attached to the chamois arent bonded together and when the lycra starts getting like white dots on top it means that the bib/short is ready for the trash.

Isn't their life expectancy determined by number of wearings and washings rather than age?

Wearing each pair an average of once a week, I'd say I consider most bibs "dead" after 2-3 years.

Wishing you luck.
I've tried several, but no knicker has ever measured up to my orange pad Assos knickers.

(Whoops, meant this reply to the post above yours).

If you have like 2 pairs, yes. But here the guys probably have several pairs and then the stuff enter in the rotation and one pair can last several years specially if the dude has another pair that is his fav.

I've never had a chamois exceed a lifespan. They seem to last longer than the lycra, and I wouldn't be surprised if you could cut the chamois out of a pair of shorts and reuse it.

It shouldn't matter? Do you use Chamois Cream? That will help. I have an old orange chamois in a pair of the knickers from like 2008 or so. The lycra is thinned right above the back f the chamois, so no longer appropriate for group rides.

But yeah, go buy so new bibs. I think the purple chamois are better than bother the old orange and aqua-marine ones.
