Classic steel bike / fit question
Apologies if this is a dumb question:
My primary training bike has been a CAAD10, size 56; but now I'd like to put more miles on my De Rosa Primato. The only thing is, at 55cm center to center, the bike is a tad small by 1-1.5cm. So when I transferred my fit over, I had to use a decent bit more seat post and a longer stem. Are there any potential issues with more post, etc. that I'm missing? |

Unless you need to exceed the max limit lines on the stem or seatpost, or the smaller frame limits your stem height, resulting in saddle to bar drop that is unacceptable, it's not a problem.
A photo of your Primato setup might confirm to some of us that the frame, or setup, is out of range.

I have a record titanium in there now and there’s no limit mark; that said it’s a 220 and doesn’t insert much past the seattube lug, so I probably need a 250 or more to be safe. The stem is a 3TTT and 120, I think.
What size is your prized Primato? |

Ignore the wonky saddle position. The post height looks less dramatic in person. Yeah, mine is 55 and I’m about 6’0.

I have a Record 10 group ready for it. I’d hate to go on some quixotic search for a well priced and lightly used 56.

That much seat post looks odd to me for a classic frame and I think it's too short if it just clears the seat tube lug. Have you tried bigger frames?

I'm in a similar position. My 55 cm Primato is also ~1 cm small compared to my other bikes. What I do is to maintain the amount of drop that I'm used to rather than absolute values of seat height or stem height. I may cheat my leg extension slightly, but not in any noticable way for me. The primato has a relatively shallow STA in that size range (~72° or 72.5°) and so I had to adjust my setback accordingly. Again, saddle height and stem length (or height) were then dialed in to give me the drop I needed. No issues at all....
GL. It's a great ride.

Too small for you. Without knowing your measurements, I'd try to trade for a 56.5-57.0.

I might have something bigger that Im not using that could satisfy you in same way than that bike... just sent you an email using the email feature...

I agree that that's an awful lot of exposed post. And guessing at your size requirements the stem looks to be a little on the short side.
