Is it strange to own multiple versions of the same bike?

Hiya!

Interested in the thoughts of the greater paceline gang for a quick question.

Has anyone picked up two of what is basically the same bike?

I'm looking at building a frame or picking up another built bike. Currently own a caad13 rim brake... was thinking... maybe a disc brake caad13 set up to be a bit less aggressive while still being able to party.

I've heard of folks doing this when racing, but anyone else?

It's only acceptable when serially acquired. You have to sell your current one. Then realize you miss it. Then buy another.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Use the rim brake model for climbing days and the disc for rain days.

We are all weird in our own way. You do you.

If you love it, maybe you'll love the next one more. Maybe less. But you won't know until you try.

You might have more fun building something different, just because variety keeps things interesting. Lots of early rim brake aero bikes that should be super cheap these days etc. Worst case you sell it and then buy a CAAD anyway.

Nearly any purchase related to this hobby can be justified.

I’m about to. I own an Allied Alfa I purchased when Allied was just getting going. I love it. It’s set up with 11-spd Etap and rim brakes. I’m going to be ordering a new Alfa within the upcoming month. My old Alfa will be my spare/trainer bike. I’m looking at the new Red AXS and thinking that I really need/want it.

I had a street version and a track version of the same motorcycle.
Same bars, same orientation, same shift pattern, same ergos, etc.

not weird.

Yeah, but was it an SV650?

I bought the rim brake caad13 partially because I liked the idea of it, having raced a rim brake caad9 in college. So I bought it as a bike I could weight weenie out a bit, which I have been, but I've wanted something with disc brakes for some time. It checks a lot of the boxes... in that it'll be more relaxed than my rim brake variant (can leave the steerer a bit higher), it should clear 32's, and it should have discs and be a reasonable weight.

I have a line on something else via the classifieds that I'm excited about for a totally different reason, though the process is taking a minute since I think it involves coordination between a few people. I just found a decent deal on a caad13 with some spare parts that would allow me to build up a slightly nicer commuter and sell the clunker I've been commuting on.

Same bike. Rim brake and disc brake variants.

One of each.

another bike is always a good choice IMHO.. esp if you can get it in a different color than the one you already have!

plus your reasoning is sound in my book.. save the rim brake for those dry days you just want to go fast and not necessarily long and have the disc bike for the other days.. sounds like a win-win to me!

Same frame, different sizes and colors and different versions of the standard fork. Keeping them both for now cuz they're soooo nice (and fortunately am not in a jam financially right now).
