Octalink BB unthreading

Went for a short ride today. I guess it has been too long since I rode. The FD wouldn't reach the big ring and the drive side BB started unthreading. I have never had a bottom bracket back out. Any tips on how to fix that? Do I need to remove the crank?

Yes,Must remove crank but crank hopefully has self extractors..so just an allen wrench to get the cranks off.
Depends on the BB you have. The above tool is for ultegra/105, if DA, different tool required..

BUT, if ultegra/105..take BB out, left side first, then RH cup..hopefully if a metal frame, the BB shell has been faced and the threads are clean.
If English threading-RH cup is left threaded(righty-loosey) marked 1.37by24..I suspect your is Italian threaded..RH cup correct threaded(lefty-loosey), marked 36by24..

LOTSA grease, telflon tape on threads and hopefully a tool where you can secure the tool to the BB spindle to make the RH BB cup TIGHT, like REALLY tight.

Let us know if the BB is italian threded and if DA or other..

I've heard rumors of cranks backing out, but not cups.

This is a new one on me

I've seen it once or twice, Italian frames as octalink BBs can sometimes be pretty draggy.

BUT good point about the cranks..with those with self extrators..I took the self extractors off and installed the cranks visually, to make sure the 'hills and valleys' lined up before torquing....

Fairly recent Ciocc San Cristobal. I thought it was English like my Bianchi but the Ciocc website says Italian.

I bought the necessary tools to fix the problem when Performance was going out of business but instead of taking the time to learn how to use them today - I took the bike to the LBS. They know what they are doing and it only cost me $15.

Thanks for the advice. I know now that the BB is Italian.

Thanks for the advice. I know now that the bb is the 'far superior italian threading'.

English threading BB's dont do that with the cups? the more you ride the tighter the cups get.

With italian the NDS gets tighter and the driver side cup if you dont know what are you doing it might get lose.

I learned that Italian thread is righty-tighty, lefty-loosey on both sides. English thread is reverse threaded on the drive side to prevent loosening.

Sounds pretty smart to me.
