Funny thing, the OP's shop is completely out of the equation on this one

About 10 years ago Nashbar had a bunch of NOS Vitus 979 frame and forks on sale. I got one but never dared to build it up, and used the original EAI box it came in to send a f&f to Australia.
Knowing the history of the 979 and those bonded joints, I'm thinking that maybe I should have saved that box too - to dump all the pieces... |

The chain came off but was surprisingly intact and undamaged.

Am I the only one who finds the protective piece of tape where the frame snapped a little suss?

I believe that is what is left of the backing from the protective metal plate that attaches via sticky tape.

I can think of two ways in which this happened, both of which have been mentioned here recently.
1) His wife got a haircut and he didn't notice. 2) He made the mistake of trying to fend off a bear with a carbon fiber bike.

Maybe the guy is (was?) married to a bear who got a haircut and he didn't notice. Double whammy. He's lucky he wasn't torn to pieces himself.

The cranks cracked too in line with the frame. This was hit hard by something there.

Plenty of clearance now for some fatter rubber.

What type of socks was he wearing? Hmm...

Looks to me like he hit a stick or something that scraped the crank while breaking the ds stay.
