Funny thing, the OP's shop is completely out of the equation on this one

No such thing as a Canyon dealer. Customer is on their own

Knowing the history of the 979 and those bonded joints, I'm thinking that maybe I should have saved that box too - to dump all the pieces...

The chain came off but was surprisingly intact and undamaged.

Am I the only one who finds the protective piece of tape where the frame snapped a little suss?

I believe that is what is left of the backing from the protective metal plate that attaches via sticky tape.

This ^

Could be his fault, could be not. Sometimes sh*t just breaks. It was built by a human and we all make mistakes at some point, so I'd be hesitant to judge too quickly.

I can think of two ways in which this happened, both of which have been mentioned here recently.

1) His wife got a haircut and he didn't notice.

2) He made the mistake of trying to fend off a bear with a carbon fiber bike.

Maybe the guy is (was?) married to a bear who got a haircut and he didn't notice. Double whammy. He's lucky he wasn't torn to pieces himself.

The cranks cracked too in line with the frame. This was hit hard by something there.

On a positive note for internal cables; they sort of held the rear end together!

With the amount of abuse that bike has clearly experienced, the rider should be banned from owning a bike like that. It looks like he uses sandpaper to clan it.

Looks to me like he hit a stick or something that scraped the crank while breaking the ds stay.
