Personally, I think a bit of off-topicness is good. Clearly, in today's political climate, veering into that space can be problematic, but I've never met a bikie who is so one-dimensional that it's bikes, bikes, bikes 24x7. This is the place (for example) that I learned:

• Many Paceliners seem to drive VWs
• Paceliners seem to have a very healthy appreciation for espresso around these parts
• There is a large group of Navy vets here with experience navigating big ships

These are all things I would know much less about (I drive a VW and drink espresso, but was never in the Navy) were it not for this generally friendly group of bike peeps. I participate in other online groups which are much more unidimensional. I'm sure is plenty of interesting non-bike expertise in those places as well, but I will never be exposed to it.
