Disappointing wheel build(s)

I've had a couple of pairs of Sun Swift rims here for a while. Finally decided to build a pair up. Guess that I am used to building traditional box section clinchers and tubulars - found that I couldn't get these rims nearly as round as I am used to and keep tension equal. In addition there is one nipple that is way out of alignment to the spoke. At least it is on the left side so tension will be lower. Still, a frustrating experience.

The rim sleeve is causing that. It can be fixed with some attention to the inside removing some of the sleeve material where the nipple sits.

What Ergott said and when you don't pay a lot for a rim, you get a cheap rim. Built more than a few Sun rims and I never expect them to be as 'perfect' as a rim costing twice as much..Having said that, Sun rims can still be made into a reliable wheel..just not going to be as 'perfect' as other new rims in terms of round and true..

DO you have room to remove that sleeve and put a rim washer?

No, the washer would be on top of the sleeve then.

i imagine that, I would just grab a file to get that as perfect as possible.

Sapim makes 2 type of washers... im talkging about the tiny ones that are like oval, not the flat ones... welll... w/o having the rim is hard to tell what can be done tho.

Thought about attacking it with a file so the insert can sit at the right angle. Assuming it would be better to file more up near the rim tape goes rather than where the nipple comes through. Guessing that egging the hole out near the rim ID would let the insert drop.

You could take a drill bit that's larger than the head of the nipple and with a hand drill, remove the sleeve material until you at the rim. Plenty of oil on the bit and a really slow speed and you could attempt with a drill if you feel confident.
