Now that the 28mm GP4000 are gone

What did fans of these move on to?? Comparable inflated width, sticky, and weight. These with latex tubes I prefer to TL/TLR for road.

I thought there was more older threads on this, but a search not fruitful.

I am on my last pair, and not finding any at all anywhere, well except for stupid coin on eBay.

On 19.5 internal rims these @ 31mm are sweet spot for my Domane Classics.

I think, but not sure, that the 32mm 5k will be bigger, I know they are heavier. So that means more tire, thus probably just a tad too fat for this bike.

If the Conti GP 4000 700x28 are all gone, have you considered getting the GP 5000 700x28 tires? They seem to have good reviews and appear to be available for about $42-45 each:

Good Luck!

lol, is this a trick question?

it's not as if Conti left some void in their tire lineup, they updated the tire, went from a 4000 to 5000 in naming convention and the tires are available everywhere now, often at steep discount. why on earth would that not be your first thought if you liked the GP4000's?

I am a big fan of Hutchinson Fusion 5 all season tires in 28mm. I have them on 2 bikes, Lemond Tourmalet and Soma Smoothie. The Smoothie has butyl tubes and the Tourmalet with latex. The latex is definitely a better ride, IMO, and I will be putting them on the Smoothie. Unfortunately, like most bike related items, the price has really gone up on these tires.

My latest favorite tire, now hard to find, is the Vittoria Open Pave, 27mm, with latex tubes. It is the smoothest riding combo I have used. You can still purchase these at www.chainreactioncycles.com from a clearance sale. If IRC, with the 10% discount, the tires were $26 each, free shipping starts at $99. Recently, the shipping has been fast for them.

I know it seems like that, but wondering if the OP, like me, has tried out the 5000s and whereas the 4000 sii's were nearly puncture proof (ymmv, but in my experience, the tires lasted for four...years) and my third time out with the 5000's i experienced a sidewall tear, so to ebay I went to stock up on 4000s, for piece of mind if not actual performance difference.

I have some 27 green stripe Paves, agree ride sublime.

I am looking for the 30-31mm sweet spot for the Classics Domane.

5K wise, have 25s and 28 TL. Nothing makes me feel these work better for what I put them on than 4Ks.

I do have some fusion 5s and Pro4 SC that will get close inflated, but really looking for the 30-31 sweet stop on 19.5x622 clinchers.

I have a stash of GP4kii 25-700 I gladly trade some for 28s of same.

The 5000's measure true to size listed. The 4000's always measured larger than the listed size.

Yep, and where the 28 4k worked perfect, I am between tire sizes in the 5Ks for this bike. May have to give up the ghost.

The kinda funny thing is the 4k 28s sat here until I got the Classics Domane being too big for most my bikes I'd use them on. and tried them on.

+1 I had two sets of low mileage GP5k tires with sidewall issues. All paved roads, all same routes I took with the 4k's and had no issues for years.

I've not ridden the 5Ks I got to try yet out much, but that is not encouraging to read, and more than once too.

I prefer michelin tires. For tubed applications I really liked the power endurance model. I'm running 28mm michelin tubeless on 19mm internal width rims now. So far, they've worked well.

I’ll put it out there that Pirelli just released a new series of PZeros that includes a 30mm width. So if a true 28 is really narrow and a true 32 is too wide, then maybe that’s the right width. Those Pirellis were announced a couple days ago, so no rolling resistance testing yet. I recall that Pirelli’s last Pzero (not the TT version) was about 2W per wheel slower than a GP 5k, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this iteration closes that gap (but again, no data available, so that’s speculation).

Strange - I had sidewall blowout issues on the GP4000 in 700x28. Like catastrophic failures on almost new tires on paved roads. I have one just hanging in my garage that's pretty much new. Happy to send it to you for free if you cover shipping. No more Contis for me.
