My one and only experience with a bike-related concussion happened at the parking lot going at maybe 5 mph. It was a fluke accident. I was just testing out something on my bike, didn't have my helmet on, saw something sticking out on the front brake, reached down to yank it off and before I know it, my hand got caught in the spokes, I flipped over and went down head first. The next thing I know I was on the ground, the whole world is spinning around me, a loud siren in my head, I tried to get up but fell right back on the ground. I crawled a few yards to a curb and sat up. Not sure how long I sat there, lost track of time, but must be quite a while.

+2 on the Aries. It's a great helmet and the front brow pad, with the silicone in it, keeps a lot of sweat out of your eyes. It's almost as if they incorporated one of those old Sweat Gutr's in the pad.

I used POC Ventrals for a few years but the Giro simply fits my head a lot better and more securely.

I would just buy a mips Poc helmet if you like the fit! Hope you are feeling better and recover quickly. I have too big/hard of a head, so I have not experienced a concussion, but have had my bell mildly rung in my younger days. Good luck!

Hi,

I too took a bad fall in late December, spend two nights in the trauma unit, and suffered a concussion. I was treated by specialists at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where they have conducted cutting-edge research on different types of concussions and their treatment. They have identified six different types with a different treatment protocol of each. Mine was a 'vestibular' concussion.

Much of this research has taken place in the last five years. I urge you in the strongest terms to see a doctor and, if possible, a concussion specialist. The old treatments (stay away from screens and avoid stimulation) have been replaced. And MIPS helmets do help with impacts that create a rotational injury to your brain. Please see a doctor and ask for a concussion specialist in your area.

How is the Aries fit in comparison to Spec Prevail? I have older Prevail perhaps time to move on.

As others have said above, do NOT mess around.

My worst crash (where I woke up while being loaded into an ambulance), the ER doctor said to me when they released me that I was not only not allowed to drive but after I got driven home I should stay out of cars for awhile because if there was a car crash I was very susceptible to another and even worse concussion and that would be really bad.

My crash this past September, when they released me they emphasized not to ride a bike or do anything where there was a possibility of hitting my head for the next 30 days.

The crash I had exactly 30 days after being released from the September crash, the ER doctor made me stay overnight and then get escorted home on the subway insisting that no cabs were allowed. He said have you ever wondered why the NFL has problems with ex-players and brain damage?

In all three crashes, I have no doubt that the helmet saved my life. Was it the MIPs in them I don't know but I know that I am fine now and typing this and still riding. So, I am still buying the same POC helmets with mips because why mess with what has been success for me.

I crashed 20 minutes into my new Aries a few weeks ago and it seemed to help save my head. I only got a mild concussion. I replaced it with the same. I didn’t do much research before purchasing only noting it tested high for safety and looks smaller on the head. I didn’t realize it’s nearly two helmets in one and can move separately. It fits a lot different (better) than previous giro helmets I’ve owned…and is why I moved to Lazer for a number of years until now.

I bought the helmet for the sweat feature. The silicone strips do not improve my experience with sweat in the eyes at all.

It seems like bad luck you crashed at all and bad luck you managed to hurt your head with only minor damage to the helmet. I would really suggest going to the doctor.

I have only had one really bad OTB race crash in a pileup. Completely destroyed my helmet (can't remember what it was but it was one of the Euro brands) but did not have a concussion. Very very scary crash there were people trying to keep me down on the ground they expected me to be so badly hurt.

If I had multiple concussions I would be thinking a great deal about changing my riding or finding a new sport. There are a lot of other sports at this point where you are off the team somewhere around 3-5 concussions. My wife played college lacrosse and she was within 1 concussion of being taken off the team by the time she finished, and she was one of the star players.

There are so many helmet brands out there that have good safety ratings and have the MIPS stuff, I would really shop around while you're healing up and check out stuff like the UVA helmet ratings. Some of them are so darn comfortable now if you find one that really matches your head shape.

That's interesting. I found the Aries brow pad to be a marked improvement over the pads that my POC Ventral had.

Wow - glad you're OK. Sounds like you hit hard.

I crashed on asphalt in ~1989 with a full body whiplash smack on my head that cracked my helmet clean through in three places. Have not been without a helmet since. Not sure what all the MIPS or Spherical Technology does for a straight (non-rotational) impact, but like I said, I do not ride without a helmet.

another vote for the Aries.. just picked one up a couple weeks ago and it is sooo nice!
