My first road race bike was an RD400. Then next year was an RZ350. Lots of fun until I highsided in Phoenix in 1988 at 110 an took a helicopter ride I don't remember.

Below is my old 2005 R6 track bike. A former Robert Jensen bike. Had the highest trap speed at Daytona in 2005. 180 something I'm told.R6 TWS 2011.jpeg

Yeah, the old RD400's, did you ride in the stock class with pipes all flattened?

The RZ oh boy, like the one you wish you could forget!

I high-sided an RD400 at a thankfully very low speed (I scrubbed off a lot of speed while moving sideways before my throttle-chop finally caught up with me and I hi-sided, ouch.

Serious Monkey business. She likes her Banana yellow more than my Nebula red. Women, what do they know.

Here's my '73 RD350 I got in High School.. It's just a touch modified from stock and still great fun 40 years later!
And just for fun, his younger cousin, 1985 RZ500

That's a nice example of a LeMans.
I seem to recall seeing one or more of these in the very late 1970s also with no air filters, just coarse screen domes, but being ridden on the street.
I sort of cringed at the thought of the longer-term cost-per-mile, couldn't fathom that the bikes were ever sold like that.

Both the MG LeMans and its Italian competition the Ducati 900SS came with open velocity stacks with 'screens' across the open bells in the late seventies.
Earlier British and Italian bikes of 'sporting intent' were sold with just open stacks for decades.
In a fairly wet environment it really wouldn't be a huge deal as the top ends weren't really long lived anyway! But on real public roads today, I would never run open velocity stacks on a bike I liked...

I just picked up a 2015 KTM RC390 Cup bike for track-only use. It's been a while since I've been on a bike with only about 40hp. But should be a lot of fun!

This is probably going to put a hurting on our bicycle fitness. We have been riding two up more and more lately, so we decided to get a better bike for it. This thing is amazing.
Picked it up yesterday near State College, Pa. The ride home was about 140 miles and temps were between 35 and 40 the whole time. Thought I would freeze, but actually had to shut my electric vest off. The heated seat and hand grips, plus the windshield keeping the air off me, left me cozy the whole time.

But what about the hot/humid Summers we have on the MidAtlantic? There is no way I could ride in Summer without mesh gear and no windscreen. I did try one of the little windscreens for my BMW S1000R, when it gets cooler, but the buffeting noise made me take it off right away.

Definitely will be wearing a mesh jacket in hotter temps. Hopefully with the windscreen in the full down position I will get enough airflow to add some relief from the heat.
