bikes are objectively better in many ways - suspension design, component design, new parts like dropper posts - but I dont think the build quality and design of frames is one of them.

I've no idea why it costs more but it's a sharp looking bike. I love the Lime Shimer color!

Fun to listen to the Cyclingtips Nerd Alert podcast guys views on this "feature".
I think they had a bit of a rant on the following pod, but it might have been a different one.

Well in my world the answer is always maybe. An argument can be made that in some instances (mountain bikes?) we often trade durability for innovation but the highest end bikes have always been that way no? Sorta. They more mountain bikes have developed suspension with multitudes of pivots the greater chance for "problems" resulting from riding them hard as intended. Always been the same IMO and been repeating that one for 35 years.

But to say that carbon in the last 20 years and really in the last 10 hasn't gotten better and more durable across the board is hard for me to swallow.

We can both cherry pick for instances and use our own anecdotal data to defend anything. I ride a Caron Trek that in fact does not creak and has yet to explode.

Your mileage may very as they like to say.

Hard to argue with you.

Some bikes just do it...

Nah, Wednesday is "who cares about weight, steel bikes are the truth. Oh, and I hate disc brakes 'cause they weight too much" day.

As for the Aspero 5, yeah it's a spot-on trend catcher. Cervelo loves being known as a "Race Bike" brand, and adding "integrated" and "aero" front end with a lighter frame weight seems to tick all the boxes.... that is until you realize the weight savings are negated by the stem, bar and plug combo. And they measure 2-3 watts of aero savings at 48kph ie 30mph, which is absurd for a gravel bike. And the system is electronic-shift only, which automatically takes out a not-insignificant percentage of prospective buyers.

In the CT video review they even state at the end that there's no real reason to purchase the 5 over the regular Aspero. Hard pass.

Is shimmer/chameleon paint going to look in 2030 like the decal craze from 10 years ago looks now?

Well, I'd like to think it has, and it should as the manufacturing matures and the costs goes up.... I've had quite a few issues with carbon bikes and some pretty poor designs on newer bikes but my own anecdotes dont replace looking at quality on the aggregate - perhaps they are way better, but i've never seen the data and I doubt trek/specialized/giant are going to share that.

I dont think my experiences are uncommon in talking to the people I ride with and seeing their bikes, and talking to the mechanics at the shop. So while the cycling experience is pretty amazing these days - we've come a long way from 26" wheels and cantis - i still think there's still a long way to go in producing a consistent and reliable product when a new bike can approach the cost of a cheap car.

Thanks for clearing that up. Does that mean "I wax my chain every 100 miles, but tubeless tires are too much of a hassle" has moved to Friday?
