My wife and I watched Edge of Darkness tonight. Stars Mel Gibson. Good crime/thriller movie we both really enjoyed.

Riders of Justice.

Danish film with, well, Mads Mikkelsen of course, playing a career military SOG type guy.

It's a bit rambo + IT crowd + some Napolean dynamite quirks.

oh and Power of the Dog.

Didn't know where else to post this, but 'Drive My Car' is now on HBO and it is easily the best film I've seen in recent memory. Truly, truly wonderful. I didn't even think about how long the 3 hour run time was while watching it. Pacing was superb. Can't really stop thinking about it. Love the film's poster too.

Two excellent films about soldiers blinded in World War II and their subsequent readjustment to civilian life:

1) Pride of the Marines (1945), with John Garfield
2) Bright Victory (1951), with Arthur Kennedy

The Great Silence, my favorite "spaghetti western." It stars two of my favorite actors, Jean-Louis Trintignant (who just passed away) and Klaus Kinski.

Other Trintignant films that I recommend, some well known, others not so much:

Violent Summer
Le combat dans l'île
Il Sorpasso
Trans-Europ-Express
Les Biches
Z
My Night at Maud's
The Conformist
The Outside Man
The Last Train
Love at the Top
Flic Story
Three Colors: Red

Agreed.

Another film from long ago that people might have watched (but not many)

Into the West by Mike Newell.

A musician friend encouraged me to have a look at 'Not Fade Away'--which was Sopranos' creator David Chase's feature film from about a decade ago.

It's basically an autobiographical look at his late-teen years in New Jersey, and forming a rock band in the early '60s. Little Stevie did the music--and had a good chunk of the budget (and wrote some believable originals)...

For anyone who grew up then--it is wonderfully allusive--more impressionistic than narrative driven--with the passage of time marked by then- current hits. It is of course a coming-of-age movie, but for anyone who ever rented (or borrowed) amps, set up equipment in someone's garage or basement and dreamed about being a rock start, it's the real deal.
