Use a utility knife blade as a wedge and light taps with a hammer switching between sides has worked for me every time.

Along the same line (I think), I’ve had good luck lately using a 6-8” narrow and wedge shaped piece of oak. I still wrap some electrical tape around the upper aspect of the fork to avoid scuffs. Less risk of trauma to the fork (and race itself) than the usual quick n’ dirty screwdriver approach.

Knock on wood () it’s worked very well the half dozen or so times I’ve used it. As you mention, a gentler touch with the hammer and some patience are required.

You are correct. I was going to sell the fork, but picked up a new project that I’ll use it on.
