Thanks. |

Bumping this old thread.
I'll probably have to service the bearings in this CK BB. Has anyone used non CK grease in their CK bearings? I have a full tube of Finish Line grease so not really in the mood to go out and buy more. |

Any grease will work, but I stand by my statement earlier. Phil Wood is awesome

Grease is oil in 'soap'. Any grease will work fine. Even less expensive, not packaged as 'bike grease', automotive grease. Phil is made by Chevron, I think..re-packaged automotive grease.

This, use Phil or get some synthetic grease from any auto parts place.

Phil grease is great for people that want to do as little as maintenance as possible regardless of how bad conditions are. If you care, even a little bit about speed there are a mountain of much better options.

What would you suggest instead? Given the conditions I've been riding through this winter my CK hubs are due a re-grease...

Is it possible to remove this inner diameter metal sleeve/race without any special tools to get more access to the bearings for a thorough cleaning?

I just pump skf bearing grease from work into my CK bb's. Once a year.
But if I didn't have that option. I'd opt for Phil grease. |

It's gritty in there so I'd like to remove as much of the crud as I can.
Surprised that it looked so dry when I opened it. What you see is exactly what I opened up. |

I would try flushing with WD-40 then get a super fine needle grease injector. but before you flush, make sure the needle grease gun will work. Ive never done it, but that is what you want to do.
