No it really isn’t. I think avg elevation is more in the 5% range. Still it’s 11 miles up to the top and if you want to make it hard just pedal faster. Perfect for training and a beautiful ride except on sat and sun in nice weather when the cars flood the road.

Depends on how hard you push it. Even though my original post was designed to be sarcastic, riding it in under an hour is gonna be tough unless you're a very strong rider, and I imagine even a strong rider is gonna be feeling some pain from that effort. Even when I take it easy, the "ramp" at the end always seems to kick my butt.

Exactly! Diablo may not be super steep, but that doesn't make putting down a good time easy.

Initial sarcasm aside, I'm baffled by this.

Sure, he put in a decent time. But who was telling this former "competitive cycler" and national weightlifting and bodybuilding champ who dropped 60 pounds and trained for 8 months that he couldn't get up Diablo? with a support crew?! 1988 wasn't that long ago.. was it?

I heard no "he can't summit Diablo because he's 50" from the original post (video). The self-set goal for him was to do it in under 1 hour ... 55 min ideally, which I suspect was a less common feat (at any age) 30 some years ago.

Life expectancy for a 50 year old in 1988 was around 71 (white male). Today average life expectancy for same is about 9-10 years longer, so 50 had a little more negative relevance at that time.

I've not ridden Diablo, but I gather from the posts herein that everyone is blowing 60 mins away with ease and that Yaz's ride was a yawn.
