Cannondale to DA Crankset
If you were to switch from a Cannondale Si Crankset to a DA 7800 Crankset how would you go about this? Does Cdale (or somebody) make an adapter for the DA Crankset?
Any advice would be appreciated as I have no knowledge of the Cdale BB setup. Thanks, duke |

Why would you want to do this? The Cannondale IS crankset is nice. It's stiffer and lighter than DA.

SI carbon cranks
I had a six13 with carbon SI cranks. Three new SI cranks later (plus multiple trips to the machanic) the bike was returned for a full refund. The cranks kept coming loose; the crank arm threads would roll over the bottom bracket threads during the downstroke and pop back into place on the upstroke. I later learned that the problem was caused by a flaw in the design of the self extracting crank bolt, which was that they failed to tighten properly after being loosened.

Chalk me up as yet another dissatisfied SI Carbon crankset user. (This is the made-by-FSA crankset that came stock on the '06 Synapse Carbon 2.) Left crank arm started slipping after 6 or 7 months of modest use...I weigh 175lbs and ride about 150 miles/week. Turns out something had been completely stripped. Cannondale replaced the entire crankset under warranty, which was nice (although it took them seven freakin' weeks!), but now it's been another 8 months and sure enough the laft crank arm is starting to slip again.
fwiw I've heard wonderful things about the Cannondale Hollowgram SI crankset...folks rave about their performance, & no horror stories like all the ones the carbon SI's seem to garner. Last edited by Bob Ross; 12-28-2007 at 07:51 AM. |

Thanks for the responses. I'm thinking I'll go with the adapter and the DA cranks. Used DA cranks are easier to find than the Cdale ones and we are trying to keep the cost of this project somewhat under control.

i own a 2006 c'dale with the si crank. no problems after about 7500 miles. knock on wood!
my understanding is that the adaptor has to be glued (epoxyed) into the larger bb30 bottom bracket shell. i don't know if this changed in later years or not. my thinking would be that it is critical to get the adaptor alaigned. once in it's not removable. might have to do some facing to bb shell also. i know several people who went to da7800 route when they bought their c'dales and couldn't be happier. in all those cases the factory installed the adaptor. i think the adaptor is realily available at your local c'dale dealer. he may even give you some pointers if he has any experience with the installation.
