I did! I got an $800 Framed. Shimano Deore 10. The mechanical brakes suck, but the rest is pretty great for the price.

If you get real winters a fat bike is a must as long as you can handle the weather! I really enjoy it!

Nice.

See you at the river bottoms!

I ended up with a very low mileage Ice Cream Truck. Between that and my Blackborow it should be quite a winter.

FWIW That Framed Montana CF framed bike looks sweet as well.

Not a chance.

The motto around here is there is no bad weather, only bad gear.

Fat biking the greenway, river bottoms and local trails or studded tire coaster brake racing at Brownie lake, we embrace it all, all winter here!

Oh, you said -20 degrees F. Yeah that is cold. I tap out around -10 degrees F generally so its fireplace, vinyl and Scotch those days

We go further up north to our family cabin in Ely.

Right next to the Canadian border.

Snowshoes, snowmobiles, fatbikes etc.

Bourbon doesn't hurt.

Even colder up there.

What do you do?

Pros: a much better whole-body workout compared to cycling (in fact, one of the very best), way more tolerable mentally compared to a bike on rollers or a trainer, not nearly as bad on your knees, $900

Con: Not as good as being outside

My home weather station said it was 25 degrees wind from the Northwest at 11 MPH. It was about 2pm and I decided to ride. I wore a 250 weight base layer a Wabi Woolens jersey and topped it off with an Ibex jacket. Tights over bib shorts, 2 layers of wool socks and a Rapha merino wool cap with a Smarrtwool neck gaiter. After about an hour my feet were ice cold, the rest of me was fine.

Highlight of the ride was after about 2 miles from home I saw a large black and grey wolf cross the road about 50 yards ahead of me. It was moving fast and I stopped to watch. After it crossed the road it went into the woods about 50-75 yards and looked back at me for 20-30 seconds then bounded off. It made up for the cold feet.

I was more concerned about the patches of ice on the roads than the wolf. At 76 with two knee replacements another fall could be an issue for me long term. I'm still trying to sort out riding in these conditions. I admire the fat bike folks for their dedication to winter riding, but that is not me.

At 38, I do worry about a nasty fall on ice too. I ordered up spendy studded tires. Hopefully I'll stay in one piece.

My buddy in Hayward has been skiing already. He's loving it and I'm jealous.

Winter Motivation

1. Set goals!!
2. Establish a plan to achieve said goals.
3. Implement the plan.

I ride a road bike on my smart trainer using Trainer Road 3X per week. Strength train 3X per week. Swim 1X per week. Long walks/hikes/runs on the weekend depending on weather.
