Up next, gravel bikes that go thru the same mission creep mountain bikes did. IE suspension stems, suspension seat posts, front fork suspension, rear suspension and the list goes on.
I do think gravel bikes have a better chance at a big market share. Roads are getting to be in crappy condition, car drivers are only getting worse, tire development for cushy/fairly fast rubber and gravel specific events seem to be taking off. IMO, the gravel bike is the true title holder of "hybrid".

1986 is a little late for them to be noticing a phenomenon that was by then the biggest selling genre of bicycles.
When Gary Fisher and I rented a garage and named our two man company "MountainBikes," we figured the market was a few dozen a year. As Gary said, "Who is going to pay $1300 for a bike that rides on $3 tires?"
