Campy 12 speed chain options

I’m building a new bike with Chorus 12. It’s my first experience with Campagnolo. I haven’t bought a chain yet, but I have the rest of the group set. Now I read that I need an extremely expensive chain tool to peen the chain and that no quick links are available.

I plan to use the bike for randonneuring, so the idea that I’d have to carry a big chain tool and an entire extra chain in case of a snap is pretty unappealing. (Currently I just carry a quick link and the chain tool on my multitool.)

I see Wippermann and KMC make 12 speed chains with a quick link. Anyone have experience using these with Campy 12 group sets? Thanks.

A modern park chain tool will break a Campy chain. Other brands of quick links may work with the Campy chain. I used to recommend a sram eagle link, but it's not perfect due to a recessed area in the Campy inner links. I just checked a YBN 12 speed quick link and it does fit a Campy 12 chain.

I had good luck with SRAM Force AXS chains.

I've never seen a Wipperman 12 chain sold anywhere. Maybe someone can post a link.

You can get the Wippermanns from Europe, on starbike and other sites.

Abbey has a tool for you.

This is your opportunity to get to know Abbey Tools . A Decade Chain Tool works on Campy 12 as well as pretty much any modern chain. Its a beautiful thing all by itself and you'll never need another chain tool.

Do the KMC 12s missing links not work with Campy..? it does say KMC and SRAM chains (leaving out Shimano and Campy), but... $5 per ML isn't bad at all, right?

oh and the aforementioned YBN missing links, even cheaper.

It’s possible that Dave is more discerning than I, but I’ve been using Eagle links on Campy chains for the life of my groupset (>15k miles) and have no complaints.

I replaced the original Campagnolo SR 12 speed chain on my Bishop with a KMC X12 speed chain. It worked ok. Slightly louder and slightly "sloppier" than the Campy, but not too bad. 5000 miles on the KMC and I replaced the KMC with a SRAM Force flat top. What a difference. The SRAM chain is quiet and works with my SR drivetrain perfectly, reminding me of the original chain. And, the SRAM Force is pretty much equal in price to the KMC. No more KMC chains for me!

I've been on Campy for 13 years and have always used quick links. SRAM has been reliable, but like mentioned, I don't like the recess in their 12 speed link. I've been using a KMC 12s link on the SR12 group for a while now. Super smooth, no issues.

That said, I did, however, have bad luck with a KMC 11 speed chain years ago. It broke, clean through the middle of a link. So because I didn't have anything to break the chain (never leave home without one), an extra quick link availed me nothing.

For reference, at the time I was 152 pounds @ 5'10" and churning 287 watts over 20 minutes. So in other words, #notpro and it should not have broken. Lol. I only recommend Campy chains for Campy gruppos.

Benvenuti a Campagnolo!

EDIT: Most any chain breaker can be used with Campy chains. The Campy chain tool is not necessary to remove links.

I use a kmc quick link on a Chorus chain. Flawless to me.

I use an AXS flat top chain myself. It is showing phenomenal wear resistance so far.

Copied

I copied Angry as well and use a force flat top with my chorus 12s and it’s perfect and has been lasting a good while for me…
