Look for something with SRAM Rival or 105 electronic and disc brakes, so you're not stuck with skinny tires.
Honestly before dropping $2500+ I would suggest a $200-400 bike fit. That would narrow down the search a ton, and end up paying for itself with a single depreciation hit from buying the wrong bike and needing to sell it at a big loss.

But in replying to quote above, 105 di2 is still very rate and as such is way more expensive than ultegra or grx mechanical 11s. Sometimes it’s even cheaper with discounts to grab a previous-gen force axs or ultegra di2 bike vs 105 since those models are starting to get discounted.

But just for bike choice, after getting the bike fit would suggest keeping mind open with a broader budget and possibly even more disc brake bikes, vs strictly trying to go by the “msrp” or “discount.” You’re not getting a “deal” or finding “value” if the bike is a mismatch. You can get an amazing deal on Kobe beef, but if you’re a vegetarian that means bupkis.

Yep. I suggested that to a woman in our Sunday morning group + some Campy Fulcrum wheels. Mechanical and rim brakes is exactly what she wanted. She loves it.

Best new carbon race bike deal for someone dipping their toes in?

If their (Canyon) weight spec is right, $3k for a 7 kg Ultegra bike seems like a pretty good deal.

Canyon all day. The specs on the Giant wheels aren't bad, but at a $1350 upgrade, there are many better options for upgrading wheels if that's something you want to do in the future. Yes, plenty of rim brake options. You heard me say it.

I could not help but keep browsing the Canyon website (its been a couple years).

So for $5K on this model you get a $2,500 wheelset, 12sp Ultegra Di2, power meter and expensive bars/seatpost?

Kind of weird, $5k with no real need to upgrade anything?

I am not in the market for a carbon bike but next time I am, I know where I am looking. Matter of fact, I could buy that bike just for the parts, sell the frame for $1,500 new/unridden and feel like I came out ahead.

It seems like a good deal. I'm curious about a couple of things:

1) does it matter if it's 11 speed? (Paceliners can comment)
2) if the 11s Ultegra is good, then a powermeter, and discs for another $500 is great no?
3) Your buddy isn't a 58 is he? If he is, the Canyon is terrible

I’m not seeing that spec / price for the Ultimate. Are you looking at the Endurace by chance?

This ONLY works IF you find a good bike filter, many of us have waisted way more that that on a bad fit.

Does it have to be new?
Lots of slightly used carbon bikes available for half price.

Just looking at new at the moment, but certainly the used market has some deals.

That Canyon looks great.. and the M will fit me like a glove.
Thankfully I am tapped out right now.
A friend back in Florida bought one of these to get started on the road.
It was a really great bike.

Just my 2 cents.

As an aside Canyon charges $650 (that is the only option) shipping for their bikes to anyone in Alaska,Hawaii or Puerto Rico

That is pretty insane!
I see folks complaining online often
