Mech group, rim brake availability
At what point do we think it's time to hit the panic/hoard button on this stuff?
I'm guessing the development of these mech/rim groups has either stopped, or is about to. I'm fine with development ending as I think current stuff is as good as things need to get. I don't need any more cogs. 12 is cool with me. Personally, I'm only concerned about Campy stuff. While I'm fine with electronic/disc stuff, I'm more interested in keeping my Pegs and Kirk adorned with parts for the next 15 years or so. Yes, I've hung etap on a bike with cable stops. But I'm not overly interested in doing that. And yes, parts last a very long time. DRs, aside from a wreck, should last forever. Shifters as well...but they tend to get gunked up after several years of use. I know shifters can be rebuilt. I have Old P rebuild 10s shifters for me. So I think a few extra groups put on a shelf isn't a bad idea...I just don't know if the time to start hunting is upon me. Are we at a point where those of us that use this stuff (and have no intention of moving away from it) need to start gathering parts? I'm also feeling similarly regarding rim brake rims/hubs. I already have a set of rims set aside, and am considering adding more to the stash. This all feels odd to me as I'm not a hoarder, and, up until now, I've never considered stashing parts for the future. I've always just blithely ordered when stuff was needed.

There's no time like the present ... I'd start today.

I don't think so and hope not. It's hard to imagine Campagnolo no longer having parts at any point in the near future. That could be cautious optimism on my part since I'll be building up a lugged steel bike with mechanical shifting and rim brakes next year.

Some of us started hoarding at 10.

Considering I outfitted a my latest Ellis Briggs with NOS
Suntour, I figure in about 40 years, we should be out of mech parts. This doesn't count nutters like Rivendell and Rene Herse making new antique derailleurs. |

I'm fully in mechanical hording mode.

Glad this question came up as I was wondering the same thing. I have Campy 11 on my Sachs and am thinking about getting a Campy 12 group just because. There is absolutely nothing wrong with my 11 speed stuff.
Probably over thinking this. |

Plenty out there no need to hoard.
Anybody have any 13-29 Campagnolo cassettes? |

Lol. Exactly. I thought this was the best cassette ever made for 10s.

Too true!!! AND, I would never have switched. Except, the 11 and 12s ergos are more betterer (atmo).

I think if you plan on keeping rim brake bikes for a long time then pre-emptive buying of parts that wear out is a good idea.
I recently put a Dura Ace 9000 crankset on one of my bikes. I like it, I plan to stay with it for life. I looked for a spare 50T chainring, only one vendor in the world has them and it is $238 which is about what I paid for the whole crankset but I will probably spring for one. |

Following.
I'm thinking of a Bishop Item 4 on my 65th in 4 years and will very likely build it with a mechanical drivetrain and rim brakes - direct mount no doubt. I'm banking on the future availability of these parts. |
