The overnighter

Well I finally did my first overnight with a bicycle. I've backpacked plenty of times but I've never been really interested in an overnighter with my bicycle. More recently, however, I've been thinking how it might be fun to do. This past weekend I finally had my chance.

I got invited to go on a 2 day overnight adventure. We would be staying in a hostel so equipment needs would be minimized. Sounded perfect for my first time. It was a great route of 170 miles and 14,00 feet of climbing over gravel roads through the Ochoco national forest. Saturday was 93 miles and Sunday was 76. Both had equal amounts of climbing. We lucked out with the weather and had a great weekend. I'm ready to go again!

Tons of pics:

Great pictures and lots of fun. Some friends and I did the same thing to start with, an overnighter with hostel. Then we went on a 3-day excursion, then a 4-day. They were all so much fun. We stayed in hostels and motels, and had a very good time.

Nice! That looks like some great fun and appears you had favorable weather too which is always nice. These are the best kinds of posts here!

So what did you bring, spare set of bibs and jersey I assume? Any lessons learned?

This looks INCREDIBLE! I've done a few overnighters in tents, but my favorite rides have been riding to a hostel or hotel and staying the night there.

Thanks so much for posting this, very inspiring! I'd like to do similar here in New England. I need to learn how to put together routes on dirt roads and even less trafficked paved ones.

I also would like to know what you packed - sure looks as though you traveled light!!

Very impressive! Just curious where that gravel/dirt was and what tires you opted for?

Given the roads and sheer number of small inns in NE it's probably the easiest place to do overnighters and not camp.

Nice report. Credit card touring is fun because your bike is light and you can cover more distance. I’ve not bikepacked on a gravel bike because of the sheer amount of gear I have to bring but that ride looks fun. Wish we had pristine gravel roads around here.
