alternatives to winter tights for fat biking

Winter is coming soon, and I'm wondering what folks use when they don't want to put on the full monkey suit. Specifically I'm thinking of some pants for riding that might have zippers to let out hot air...not skin tight...warm enough for cold temps.

Anything at REI (etc) that you're pulling on?

I have some Rapha soft-shell pants that work well for cold cycling and snowshoeing. But, I'm mid-Atlantic, so not dealing with sub-zero temps - usually low-20s is the coldest daytime here (and even that is rare).

I like to use Swix nordic skiing pants. They're usually pretty tapered so they don't catch on the chain, but not too tight. I've had the same pair for like 15 years now, but they're also readily available at most outdoor consignment shops around here.

My rides on the frigid low temp winter days are typically no longer than an hour so I just ride with a winter base layer + regular mtn bike shorts and it works great.

I bought these swrve fleece lined soft-shell pants for dog walking/riding this winter. No zippers though. https://swrve.us/collections/trouser...shell-trousers

For serious heat dumping, maybe ski pants?---might have to get them altered to taper at the ankle.

I'm hoping for a cold winter this year.

Sporthill xc pants are my go to. Zippered pockets and legs, wind ‘proof’ and last forever. I just bought a new pair to supplement my 15 year old pair that have plenty of life yet

Use them all winter - run, ski, hike, snow shovel, etc

XC skiing has this stuff dialed in, I'd take a look at those companies for good winter gear.

Also, those swrve pics are funny...cold enough for fleece lined, windproof pants but not cold enough for gloves.

For my commute, I wear soft shell pants. Above 30, it's swrve knickers. But honestly, on the fatbike I just wear my tights because they work the best. Don't have to worry about cuff containment.
