The Rider is great. If you ever raced it speaks to you and if have not it will tell you everything that is going on inside the head of a racer.

Like the rest of the book, that story about Anquetil is fiction.

Loved that book - and you'll come across a passage in there that was the inspiration for my handle here...

The Rider has to be one of the greatest if not the greatest cycling book. Another very enjoyable read is Bill Strickland's "Ten Points". Very well written and a good story on multiple layers.

The Rider certainly should be on every cyclist's bookshelf.

The Yellow Jersey is also good. As is Need for the Bike. Fignon's autobiography We were Young and Carefree is really good. Tyler Hamilton's book is pretty good, too, for the most part. Joe Parkin's Dog in a Hat is quite good, too.

I just finished the Rider for the first time. What a great codification of the culture that surrounds road racing.

Since reading, I've been wondering what other gems I've missed out on. I just picked up a book on the monuments, but I'm curious if there any other great cycling reads like the Rider.

The Quotable Cyclist by Bill Strickland is a fantastic collection of quotes broken into chapters based on topic.

Each chapter starts with an anecdote which is kinda neat to start off the topics. The one about climbing is my favorite.

I've gifted copies to two new riders and they both loved it.

The Rider should be re-read every year or so.

I missed a meeting on it. Reads like Hemingway fan fiction for my money with cycling replacing bull fights.

I enjoyed Tomorrow We Ride, Jean Bobet's memoir about life in the pro peloton with his brother Louison far more.

+1 Tomorrow We Ride

Magnum Cycling is A+++

Not a book, but Icarus is a strong recommend. It starts as one thing and spins wildly off into something out of a cold war thriller.
