Several weeks ago, while in Maine with friends . . .
. . . several of us rode the Park Loop Road at Acadia National Park, with added spurs down to Seal Harbor, then back up all the way to the top of Cadillac Mountain. It was a beautiful day, and the only slightly unpleasant part was negotiating the segment of the loop road that includes spots like Thunder Hole, Monument Beach, and Sand Beach, where there are always crowds if the weather is nice. But there were many stretches where the road was deserted, and we could just relax and ride. Acadia is one of my favorite places and I’ve been there probably 25 times in the last 30 years. Lately I always try to include a climb up Cadillac as part of my trip. We also stopped to climb down to Little Hunter Beach to get some photos and I carted my Serotta down the stairs to get some bike lean shots. Afterwards we celebrated in the visitor center parking lot. A great day! 34.72mi/11.3av/3045ft vertical. Photos with Panasonic Lumix ZS200D and iPhone 15 Pro. A couple from the last couple of days.
It's not purple enough to be my favorite bike, but if I could only keep one, it'd be my Mog. After days on end of rain, the ground was slick, slimey, slippery, sludgy, sluggy, and soaked. But I wasn't going to ride the trainer again, no way, so went out for an awesome ride with some great gravel (read: mud) sections. I looked in the mirror when I got home and my face looked like I was in the middle of a spa treatment. At one point my legs were blacker than Manut Bol's. Yeah, good stuff. I dedicate this ride to the man who invented the garden hose.   Today was Skyline on the Ritchey, first time in over a week I'd been on Skyline, what with all the rain (respect the mountain: Don't tempt fate when storms are lingering). At first it was blue skies and sunshine, and then...more moistness and fog and a sluggy-but-not-sluggish bike getting acquainted with Mr Hose. Fantastic ride anyway! Whenever the fog lifted or rolled away for a little while, the clouds in the valley below with the mountains rising above them and the occasional patch of visible colorful farmland made for dramatic scenery. None of which I bothered to stop and photograph. But I did get this picture of a Ritchey Logic doing its best impression of a Ritchey Outback.  And because I have an abiding love for FPS's from the days of Wolf 3D, Doom, and Quake...just imagine a shotgun in place of the handlebars, and a few imps and demons and zombie marines scattered hither and yon, and my little Baron Blubba avatar at the bottom with a bloody face and a 14% number next to it. IDKFA!

I rode to one of the farm fields today to bring a couple of wagons of corn to storage. Neighbor has made this yard ornament that represents a Holstein dairy cow, made out of round hay bales. I'm pretty sure there hasn't been dairy farm operating in my county in two or three years. I'd have much rather seen a 40 acre pasture full of Holsteins but don't expect to ever see that again.

Riding this morning in Joshua Tree National Park in California. Happy to have 32mm tires for exploring these dirt roads mounted on my new wheels built by forum member Peter Chisholm.

Blandy Experimental Farm aka State Arboretum of Virginia never fails to deliver the happy. I think they spend way too much of their budget laying down the *oceans* of chunky gravel that covers their park roads, but hey, it makes things more exciting...maybe. If you're in the NOVA/Shenandoah area and have never been, drop that tire pressure, take your time, explore and enjoy. Or just drive there and enjoy a nice walk!
This ride took me all over the place, exploring forum member D(ave)Cama's usual haunts around Clarke County and the Cedar Creek/Belle Grove plantation and battlefield area. I am acutely appreciative of living in a place where I can ride for 3 and a half hours in peace, exploring all over the place with extremely minimal traffic and extremely beautiful scenery. I call this picture MOG Neighbor Totoro. If you haven't seen the movie My Neighbor Totoro, I cannot recommend it highly enough --and this from a not-a-big-movie kind of person. This is a hidden gem of a dirt road with spectacular views of the mountains, which also scoops down into a forested riverside setting. At the north end, you can make a left onto Meadow Mills, which, along with Pouts Hill, creates an equally sublime 8 mile gravel/dirt loop, so pretty and so much fun that I'll sometimes go there, do 4-5 laps, and ride home completely satisfied. Yes, my wife and I ride on the grounds at Longbranch Plantation, and over by Belle Grove Plantation often. Now 72, but I grew up on the Canadian border south of Montreal. My mom's side was all French Canadian. At that time, and later as an adult in NY, and PA, I had no interest in the Civil War, but now in VA, I have become an addict. I have read many books on the Civil War (3 on Gettysburg alone), the antebellum south, reconstruction and its failure, etc. I, like most, abhor slavery, but the history of that era interests me and I always like riding by those old plantations. There was an archeological dig near Belle Grove some years back on the area thought to have been the slave quarters. I don't know what they found. We moved to Winchester from PA in 1992 when our 3 kids were young. I took them for many walks around the VA arboretum for a number of years before they got into their teenage years and just were no longer interested. Again, thanks for the great post.
