It’s a shame he’s out for the rest of the Giro but after watching the video of it happening, I’m just glad and relieved for him that he wasn’t permanently blinded in that eye. Looking forward to his next race.

Given this same thing happened to MVDP last week (which thankfully it glanced off his temple) I would say there's a possible issue here.

Tell riders to NOT open the bottle with the bottle on the ground. Pick it up and use your thumbs to pop the cork.

OR... have someone pre-game the corks so the lion's share of removing them is done (which would be a problem as pressure inside the bottle would likely push the cork open pre-maturely)...

OR... have the bottles opened back stage and have the riders just pick them up, and spray them in celebration.

Peloton magazine had a really bad April fool's Day article on this a few years back. And yet it may end up somewhat coming true.

Seems it'd be a lot safer for them to hit a mary-j vape pen and blow a cloud over the fans......

Looks like changes are already happening with regards to the podium ceremony...

Thank goodness. These guys ride day in and day out, and the last thing they need to do is fiddle with a cork when they just want to clean up and eat.

Dainese made up 3 bike lengths on the best sprinters in the world in such a short distance. I did not know he had that in him. And the joy for the entire DSM team was so great to see.

My joy in this Giro was not expected either... so far it has delivered in a way that no grand tour has in recent memory.

Underdog team (IWG) punching well above their weight and reveling in the glory of a rider (Bini) they took a chance on and gave a platform to. Check.

Resurgence of a rider (Bardet) and team (DSM) that everybody loves. Check.

Righteous old dude (Cav) reliving the glory years. Check.

Gutsy defense of the leader's jersey by a young-in that no one thought would be able to do so. Check.

An aging and selfless roleplayer (DeGendt) rewarded. Check.

MVDP stepping up to the plate, pointing to the fence, and delivering. Check.

Beautiful scenery. Interesting courses and finishes. No major crashes. And the GC still up for grabs. Check. Check. Check. And double-check.

Yup, the Giro has always been my fave Grand Tour, much moreso than the TdF.

There's so much to love here. To Clean's excellent list I would add:

JuanPe Lopez throwing his weight around in the peloton like he's Hinault. I love the sass and ownership of the pink jersey. You be you, JuanPe.

MVDPs thumbs up to Biniam 10m before the line yesterday - game recognize game.

The general feeling of joy from the riders. It seems like everyone is really enjoying themselves, the countryside, the sporting competition. Contrast this with the Tour which seems to have this nervous, fraught, all-in energy that both saps the joy out of the racing and also seems to take out at least one major contender in a crash in the first 5 stages.

Add the fact that we are mid way through and there are still a solid 5-6 riders all with very real and legitimate shots at winning the whole thing.
Contrast that to the Tour where after the first hard stage Pog (and before him Froome) has all but won with almost no real drama left (in the GC).

To be fair, if either of the Slovenians had shown up in form they'd probably be squarely in control after Blockhaus. Organizers deserve some credit too though- the stage design and order means that it hast really been advantageous to control the GC yet. Super short early time trial really helps here.
