[QUOTE=oldpotatoe;2264968]Go to Italia and visit a small builder, talk to them, buy a frame...then spend some time there and fly back..

This ^. and of course you will build it with campagnolo.

Nothing troll like at all.

It was a serious question. I am planning on buying a new bike for my 50th birthday and I have a $6000 budget.

That's all.

If you provide some more guidance of the type of bike you want, what history you have etc it would help this community.

I built a Pinarello F8 with Campy Record EPS for about $6k. Doable if you are willing to put in the time and effort to bargain shop.

Some background:
I am about to turn 49. I live in Albuquerque (5000 feet elevation).

In 2017 I rode my bike 5500 miles and climbed 190,000 feet.

I do not race and have no plans to.

I currently ride a 2015 Moots Vamoots RSL, full Dura Ace (16.5 pounds)

I am looking for something a bit lighter and a little more "flashy".

My goals for 2018 are to bike 6500 miles and climb 250,000 feet.

For my 50th birthday, in a year, I am doing a two week bike trip to England and Japan.

How's that?

I guess I get the "grass is greener" thing, but in the category of very fine bicycles a "2015 Moots Vamoots RSL, full Dura Ace (16.5 pounds)" is pretty far up there imo.

I sure wouldn't be taking a $6K bicycle to England and Japan, either.

I'd get a Stelbel SB/03 disc with the best Campy build possible within budget. It would be a nice counterpoint to your Moots, probably come in at similar weight but with a different overall feel.

I'd keep the Stelbel at home (beautiful paint), and travel with the Moots, possibly refinished/de-branded.

I am not sure there is a bike nicer than a vamoots for $6000. I don't think you can buy a vamoots rsl with duraace for 6K. My guess that price is more like $10K. I would set my budget around there to get what you want. Or..... I dont know what your wheels are but if they are a bit basic why dont you buy a set a killer carbon wheels. That would make your vamoots a lot flashier, lighter, faster and under your budget.

Unfortunately, $6K bikes and flashy are two words that don't normally go in the same sentence. $6K will get you a flashy frame...but that's about it. That's not to say that $6k won't get you a good bike. On the contrary, you could get an awesome SuperSix Evo with a good groupset and wheels for the price and it will be fantastic. But, the only way you're getting flashy for $6K is to go used on everything. I think my Crumpton build was around $6K with $2k for the used frameset, $1200 for new Bora 35s, $1200 for 9150 shift group (thanks Merlin), $500 for SISL2 probably another $1k for cockpit, brakes, seatpost and saddle. That was a pretty flashy bike but I had to find some great deals to get the cost down there.

BTW, there's no reason your Vamoots can't be light. My Litespeed T3 frame is around the same weight as your frame and my bike is currently sitting at like 13.2 lbs with 9100 shift group and brakes (...and Lightweights and a handful of boutique parts).

Edit, I forgot pics as evidence of flashiness:

You can get a Responsorium for 5.7K (Ciavette) this year and then buy parts next year!

I'd get a new upper end Specialized Tarmac, Giant TCR or Trek Emonda. These bikes will shine in your cycling venue. Performance before fashion. You already have a top tier metal bike and getting another will be a step down.

Can you really get a Llewellen w/ Campy and wheels all in for $6k?
Is that US$6k or AUS$6k?
