This past Thursday . . .

. . . was a perfect weather day on the New York-Vermont border and I drove over to Poultney to ride with some friends as we scoped out a route for the Mohawk Hudson Cycling Club's Green Mountain Gravel Grab event that’s coming up on October 3-4. Every year organizer Chet (the “Gravel Giant!”) comes up with several new routes and we go do some trial rides. This 28+ mile route started in Poultney and wound around the hills to the north and east, also using portions of the lovely D&H Rail Trail that traces miles of the border area. For a small town of about 3,000, Poultney is turned on to cycling with the rail trail going right through the center of town and two bike shops on Main Street. The surrounding hills and hollows are also home to some truly great cycling on both pavement and dirt, plus some of Vermont’s famous “Class IV” roads that take you into the depths of some beautiful woodsy country. A great day! 28.64mi/11.5mph av/1749ft vertical. Photos with Panasonic Lumix ZS200D and iPhone 15 Pro.

. . . is a fantastic place to live if you enjoy cycling. In less than 90 minutes I can be in the Adirondacks in upstate NY, the Green Mountains in VT, the Berkshires in MA, the Shawangunks or the Catskills down the Hudson Valley, or the the hills around Cooperstown. Plus there has been an incredible amount of trail building in this region over the past 15 years, and now with the Empire State Trail that goes all the way to Buffalo westward and all the way to the Canadian border and NYC north and south.

Beautiful day, some detours due to the dreaded season of roads being chip sealed (emulsified oil is applied to the road surface, with chip rock added on top and rolled into the oil).

I grew up in Poughkeepsie and more recently lived one year in rural central MA. I'm pretty convinced you could draw a triangle between the centers of MA, VT, and NY, and have some of the best riding in the country. Enjoy it!

What size is that Grevil? I noticed you haven't committed to cutting the steerer.

This is a 53cm by Pinarello sizing, but more of a 54-55cm according to most brands.

Nice that we still have some honor system payment farm stands. Labor Day brought us perfect weather.
