Family was staying in Cape May, and I took a drive down for a day with my kayak in the truck, and also tucked the trusty Sequoia in the back for a ride this morning on some NJ back roads I've never expolored.

Started the ride in the high 50's and the morning cool air was glorious!

With the kayak in the truck bed, I could either throw the bike on the roof, but opted to tuck it into the shell, semi-rinko style. Worked perfectly and took up very little room.



Pushed the Sequoia through a lot of different surfaces today. The 30mm Corsa Controls are truly excellent tires.

31 miles w/ my wife down to Belle Grove Plantation and the Cedar Creek Battlefield and back:

Belle Grove Plantation sits smack dab in the middle of the Cedar Creek Battlefield, as it did during the Civil War - which is why that battle is sometimes called the Battle Of Belle Grove.

First, the weather was not exactly ideal for August, but we nevertheless had a fantastic gravel road ride out of Shaftsbury, VT. Temps were only in the mid 50’s when we rode out of the village at 10am, but warmed up to a balmy 61 by the time we finished and headed down the road to the local Amish market for some lunch a bit after 1 pm. This route included some pretty stiff climbs, but the scenery more than made up for it, even taking into account intermittent mist and some fog-shrouded hills of the Green Mountains. . . . so I ended up riding alone, but it still turned out to be a fantastic day riding up and down upstate New York’s Schoharie Valley. I started in Middleburgh and headed south under fluffy white clouds on route 30, which for the most part enjoys wide shoulders and open views. A detour up and along Bear Ladder Road added some climbing but also a host of beautiful views across the valley before I headed down again, past the Blenheim covered bridge, and more climbing to reach the overlook to Mine Kill Falls. Unfortunately, since the viewing platform was built, some trees have continued growing and today you really can’t see much of the falls from above, and I didn’t have time or shoes to hike down to the bottom. Then I headed back with stops along the way at the covered bridge and at Lansing Manor, an old mansion that now serves as the visitor center for the New York Power authority’s Gilboa Dam, reservoir, and hydro-power generating facility. Then it was time to hammer north, sticking to the highway to get back to Middleburgh to meet my girlfriend at Green Wolf Brewery for some post-ride brew and take-out pizza from Hubie’s next door. . . . it was a picture-perfect beautiful day as I met my friend Chet to do 28 gravel miles in Pittstown, NY, just east of Albany in Rensselaer County. We started at the Tomhannock Bicycles shop and rode up into the nearby hills on roads we’ve ridden before. But today the weather was so great we had to go do them again! Lots of gravel, lots of sunshine, and temps around 70. We found some eggs for sale, some wooly bears already crossing the roads in anticipation of fall, and lots of scenic vistas across the rolling hills of eastern New York state. So what's the story with this covered bridge? Not finished yet? Bridge to nowhere?

The original bridge, over one hundred years old, washed away in Hurricane Irene in 2011. This replacement bridge was built in 2017, fifteen feet higher to hopefully protect it from future flooding. Locals claim this is the longest single span covered bridge in the world. But an Oregon community claims theirs is longer.
